Category count broken

There seems to be a minor code problem on the wiki when it comes to categories:

The normal text is a headline indicating "Pages in Category XY", followed by a line that says "The following X pages are in this category, out of X total."

The problem is that X is always the same number, i.e. that line says essentially nothing. At first I thought maybe this is for subcategories within the major category, but that turns out not to be the case.
What is this function supposed to total? -- Frabby

This forum needs moderation.

As far as I can tell, the quality of postings on this forum is degenerating at an alarming rate. We apparently have a two-sided troll problem: I find some stuff voiced here to be extremely odd, but unfortunately the poster(s) is/are quite effective in derailing threads as others jump on the bandwagon and actually take up the troll game. And even those who appear to be genuinely interested in BattleTech tend to forget their manners sooner rather than later.
In fact, I find the tone of some posts rather disturbing.

I don't have any authority to call you guys to order, but still... you can surely do better than that! -- Frabby

Spambot users

Hi Nic,

as of today, several vandalism/spam edits from "registered users" (obviously spambots) have appeared. The initial attack was adding lots of gash to the front page, which is not protected against edits from registered users, in two subsequent instances. Since then I have deleted five spam articles that were entirely new, each by a different registered user.

Can we protect the front page against all edits by non-admins?

Can we place a safety system on some sort on user registration? -- Frabby

Loss of data?

For a brief time today (25 Oct 2008), sarna.net was down. When I reached the site again, I was shocked to discover that the "recent changes" log had no entries beyond October 19 anymore. Before I could investigate further, the site went down again.

When I tried back an hour later I found that the Recent Changes section had been restored all the way up to today (Oct 25). On a hunch, I checked the changes and new articles I had created in the meantime. Most of the new articles (Super Wasp, Super Griffin, Project Phoenix, Jorge Belasco) as well as edit were there all right. However, one of the entries lost all text: Vost Lance. Check you the article, you'll see what I mean. It was a full-blown article and shows in the history section, but now the article is devoid of any text without any edits to it having been done.

What happened here?
Could this have affected other articles as well? -- Frabby

Errate Project

After checking the NAIS Military Atlas and finding some small errors like displaced planet entries and also some wrong written names in the listing for Operation Rat and following those errors to other books like the unit table in the Davion Housebook, I was thinking about collecting & correcting those errors to make a user made errata and putting it under the book entries.
Also the official errata for some of the new books could be brought onto the book pages instead of being a download that is dug in deep in the download area.

Just in case I missed it, FASA didn't do any errata for those old books or?
Or is there already user errata for those books somewhere?

So is there interest in an "Errata Project"? -- BigDuke66

Sarna downtime

After 330+ straight days of uptime, the server decided to tank on me while I was on vacation out of the country. As this was 3 days ago, and I just got back home today, there was some unexpected downtime.

I sincerely apologize for forums not being up. Everything should be back to normal now. -- Nic Jansma

planet positions in the wiki

Hi,

Just in case it isn't supposed to be that way... ;-)

I like these little images of the planets' neigborhood, but it seems to me someone switched left and right.

And in the text you're showing the x-coordinate twice instead of x and y.

Greetings,
Claire

Sheesh, bump the default fonts would you?

Decide to visit after a years hiatus, interesting changes, too bad the baby sized fix px fonts (9px? 8px? Less? What is this 1984?) and locking the forums into a crappy little stripe down the left side of the screen is a good indicator I likely won't be visiting again for another year or so... (given I'm on 1600x1200 at 120dpi/large fonts, this isn't too uncommon a reaction - usually I get this with phpBB sites, not infopop)

Though I am using Opera, so I CAN just zoom it in to something useful... Lemme guess, this is a secret way to keep the traffic down, right?

Hmm, some line-height increases wouldn't hurt either - you have line-height set to the same as font-size or something? -- Deathshadow

Off Site Backup or rather, DVD Archive of the Site?

I keep finding myself coming back here now n then (every year or so) and I know how economics gets in the way of things specially when it comes to data. So out of fear that some day I might want to come back n look a few things up for the heck of it only to find that this has slid into the void of internet history. How difficult would it be to burn a DVD archive? I've got twenty bucks -- doganpc

Disallow Posting without logging in

In the Neveron Newbies forum, we frequently see topics where the latest reply is by "". I'm guessing that this means there's no notice that a post will not be seen unless you register with the forums. I'd like to suggest that either such a notice be put in, or that people who haven't logged in get diverted to the login page if they try to reply. -- mattbuck

Updated

Well, I finally finished updating most of the site. All of the links should point to their proper places in the file archive. The pages linked to on the left side of the page have been updated and don't look 1990-ish

I probably won't be doing any other updates to the site in the near future, but I have no plans to stop hosting sarna.net. I just don't have time to develop it any more. If anyone has good files I can post them to the archive, just email me.
