My Blurb: This spawns from a thread under Designs.
In the 2890s Princess Melissa Davion demonstrated the success of an integrated arms Regimental Combat Team military philosophy by liberating Robinson from the Draconis Combine. In the wake of her military reforms and success aerospace industrial moguls in the Federated Suns scrambled to propose dropship designs aimed at moving full RCTs in a relatively standardized dropship. The 7,500 ton Enmity class dropship from CMCDesigns was one of the ships proposed for production.
A Davion RCT consists of: 1 Battlemech Regiment (108 mechs) 3 Vehicle Regiments (2 medium, 1 heavy) (216 medium vehicles, 108 heavy vehicles) 2 Fighter Wings (I've included a command flight for each totaling 40 fighters) 5 Infantry Regiments (2 Foot, 2 Mechanized, 1 Jump)(54 platoons, 54 platoons, 27 platoons) 1 Artillery Battalion (36 vehicles – I chose heavy vehicles) (See page 126 of the free, downloadable, Davion sourcebook from www.classicbattletech.com)
The Enmity is designed as a long-range dropship that is tough enough to reliably get its cargoes to the surface. Its cargo bays and support systems are capable of supporting its crew and passengers for 155 days in space, allowing it to travel to targets as distant as planets in orbit around B0V class stars (planet to nadir/zenith distance 12,318.96 AU, or 347,844,546,294 km, or 216,140,580,361 miles, or 8,679,835.5 Earth circumferences).
Passenger space aboard an Enmity varies depending on the RCT components the ship is carrying, but the ship’s crew remains constant at 58. In addition to skeleton crew requirements, the Enmity looks toward the logistical needs of the RCT beyond serving as a simple troop delivery system by carrying two field kitchens with crew and a medical theater with staff. For its own needs the Enmity carries a full strength technician crew and a platoon of marines. Like most military dropships, accommodations are tight. Crew members have their own quarters on the upper decks, but the RCTs military personnel must bunk in their bays. As a safety feature for the personnel on the ship, each variant provides enough escape pods and/or lifeboats to evacuate the whole ship.
Cargo space is plentiful aboard an Emnity, though the vast majority of is ear-marked for the supplies needed for 155 days transit. However, for shorter trips the massive bays are readily accessible to carry other "cargoes," even battlemechs, or converted to steerage quarters to move additional people.
The Enmity carries a formidable set of weapon bays structured in 4 identical defensive arrays for each of the ship’s six gun ports. The backbone of the ship’s fire power is based on paired Valiant Systems Arbalest LRM 15s and paired Johnston Industries Parti-Cannon PPCs in each port, deterring would be attackers at range. For those brave enough to get in too close a Quickscell Company Crusher SH Cannon AC20 and a Lycomb-Davion IntroTech Harpoon-6 SRM6 in each port can be brought to bear. 81.5 tons of Kallon Royalstar standard armor make the Enmity a tough ship to bring down in space, the atmosphere, or even when grounded.
Opponents and critics of the Enmity feel that the crew is much too large; that having cooks, medical staff, and marines attached to a dropship wastes space and tonnage. Military critic and watchdog Frederick Hayes said, “With so many luxuries the Enmity is more suited to hauling around politicians in junket than to military action.” RCT commanders, on the other hand, favored the idea. Instead, their concern was with the logistical headache of tracking people and equipment in the mixed and matched configurations, especially the mechanized infantry, which would be spread across 10 separate ships. The configurations also made it harder to split off parts of the RCT. AFFS Marshals reminded designers that units often need to be sent do different theaters. Aerospace critics felt the defensive weapon arrays limited the ship’s roles, especially preventing it from serving as an attack ship despite its capable fire power. They also thought that there should be more than the minimum gunners to effectively man the Enmity’s 36 guns. In the end, however, the harshest criticism for the ship to overcome was the simple logistical fact that it would take 28 ships to move the RCT and 4-5 more to move support personnel (an estimated 1944 astechs alone), which would require a minimum of 4 massive Monolith jumpships.
