The Amethyst Legion is a nomadic, space-faring stratocratic civilization in the deep periphery, usually residing north-west of the Inner Sphere. Uniquely, the Legion exists nearly solely aboard space stations and spaceships and doesn't officially own any planets, although they often temporarily make landfall on uninhabited celestial bodies to mine useful materials.
The majority of the Legion's general population exists on specialized dropships called Habitat Pod. Each pod can hold around 10,000 people in rather spartan steerage-quality quarters. The crew of the habitat pod and the marines that keep the peace are somewhat better off with standard-sized crew quarters, while the officers have access to more luxurious suites. The habitat pod has sufficient supplies of consumables to exist without resupply for over a year, though the pods can either get more supplies by shuttling them in with small craft or by docking with a larger vessel.
Among the Arkships, the Odin-class is the more common one. The Odin is a simple, 500 kiloton Jumpship capable of hauling 10 Habitat Pods. The less common and more expensive Asgard-class is 2500 kilotons and features a compact drive, with far more armor, a decent self-defense array including naval guns and fighter hangars, far better recreational areas and even infrastructure for livestock to provide meat for the elites of Amethyst Legion society. Both, however, can virtually be described as "Grav-Decks with Jump Drives", given the rather ridiculous size and number of contra-rotating grav decks that are in use nearly constantly (4 for the Odin, 20 for the Asgard).
While every Arkship has its own unique culture and traditions, they do have a few constants in between them. The middle and lower class populace resides inside their respective quarters by night. By day, most work inside their Habitat Pod on certain sections like agriculture or manufacturing, but some are lucky enough to get jobs inside the main Arkship on one of the Grav-Decks, a far more appealing and highly sought-after position. The Arkship Government, consisting of 100 upper-class individuals on the Odin-class and 500 individuals on the Asgard-class, live on the Arkship itself and have an entire Grav-deck set aside specifically for their use. Near the Apex of Legion society, the only position more desirable than a governmental position on an Arkship is a governmental position on Space Station Valhalla
Space Station Valhalla serves as the Amethyst Legion's "Capital". Itself an orbital habitat, the Valhalla permanently mounts 50 modified versions of the Habitat Pod, with first-class quarters instead of steerage. In addition to those, the far-improved recreation facilities and the 50,000 upper-class citizens the Valhalla inherently holds, the space station holds a staggering twelve 1.5 kilometer grav-decks. Despite the crowded nature of space habitation, Space Station Valhalla is probably one of the best places a human can live.
Space Station Valhalla is one space station surrounded by dozens of other space stations, including other lower-quality but higher-capacity orbital habitats, defensive weapon platforms and satellites, repair facilities, and manufacturing. Endo-steel in particular is a huge Amethyst Legion export.
While the Amethyst Legion is, ostensibly, a single entity, citizens of different Arkships and Space Stations rarely interact outside of their own vessel, and are thus somewhat isolated from each other. The population aboard Space Station Valhalla, perhaps, is more effected than most.
Over years of living a hedonistic lifestyle granted to them by their status and technology aboard Space Station Valhalla, their particular subculture has grown decadent, perhaps dangerously so. Many view themselves to be better than "terrestial" humans, and even better than their lower-class colleagues, and often view both with resentment and even downright malice. Despite the quality of life aboard the Valhalla, an elevated number of individuals grow bored with the entire thing and leave to search for more thrilling experiences. Sometimes these experiences can be as tame as visiting other worlds or planets. Other times, these individuals run off to join or form their own mercenary groups and operate as hired guns for the thrill of the hunt. The demeanor of these mercenaries is so stark and immediately recognizable that these space-borne mercenaries are easily identified and referred to as "Spacers" by the Inner Sphere at large, and their conduct on the field is so horrifyingly cruel that most mercenary units won't take them and tales of bloody Spacer Campaigns are told to Draconis Combine children near the border to scare them into doing their chores. -----------------------------------
