Current dropship platforms were simply too fragile to face the advanced weaponry of Clan Fighters and the massive guns of the warships now positioned on the Draconis Combine's borders.
The DCA's first answer was the Okinawa, but it ultimately turned to a warship to provide the only viable defense against another warship, and thus was born the Kaga-Class Carrier.
Developed in parallel with other early DCA ships such as the Kyushu and Kirishima, the Kaga would be fairly slow in development. Despite its relatively conventional design, the proejct was given low priority next to the Yamato Battleship, and the Kyushu Troop Frigate. Even the flashier Kirishima recieved more attention as the DCA's fighter carrier moved further and further behind.
The project was hovering on the brink of cancellation when the Siege Of Tukayyid suddenly and irrevocably shifted the way the Inner Sphere was to think about naval warfare.
Suddenly, the little Kaga was in massive and immediate demand, if only as a hull to fill the gaps in a battle-line that was more hole than wall. Rapid development followed, with Kaga and Mount Niitaka entering service in 3068, and with an increasing production for the next several years.
Though there is no indication that the DCA plans a replacement for the Kaga Class, production has tapered off toward the end of the 31st Century, and there is some discussion of trying to produce a larger super-carrier to compete with neighboring offerings. More pragmatic voices continue to insist that the DCA doesn't need a supercarrier -- two Kagas is simply a match for a Sarna, and the DCA has plenty of hulls.
==Capabilities:== More conventional than the AFFC's Sarna-class, the Kaga nevertheless relies on the full DCA fighter regiment embarked aboard for its first line of both offense and defense. This large number of craft provides remarkable tactical flexibility, offering the ability to strike with overwhelming force or screen multiple friendly craft against attack without ever placing the Kaga itself in danger, or to screen the Kaga against close action while it engages with its own guns on the battle-line.
An above-average load of shuttles and dropships is used to provide SAR and range-extension functions for the ship's fighters. Since the Kaga itself is somewhat light on cargo, it is often supplied with a pair of large cargo dropships rather than combat escorts.
Even without fighters, the Kaga is a capable destroyer in its own right, sporting 8G maneuverability and a powerful extended-range battery centered on sixteen of the most potent particle cannons in the DCS's inventory.
As a secondary armament, the Kaga carries sixteen White Shark missile tubes, preferring the cost and mass savings of the intermediate missile system over the more flexible AR-10 system. Also included are thirty-two fighter-grade heavy energy cannons and 128 repeating tubes firing 80mm unguided rockets for close antifighter defense, and 32 Yori Flyswatter 30mm gatling cannons for missile defense.
==Battle History:== Frequently engaged, though usually at a distance, the Kaga class has served with some distinction, but never been seriously challenged, as it has mosty had to cope with pirate raiders rather than serious military forces. The DCA is reportedly excited to see what their little ship can do in a real fight.

==Deployment== Kaga fighter carriers are among the most numerous craft in the modern DCA inventory, and can be found on a variety of stations. Whether escorting larger capital ships, or serving as the primary warship for backwater star-clusters, the Kaga is in many ways the backbone of the Draconis Combine navy. Several of the vessels are also on permanent assignment with the SLDF.
