Though the deployment of the Inner Sphere's first Battleship Class since the Fall was troubling enough, it paled in the minds of that generation's warriors to one other.
That development was the Lockheed/CBM EST-R3 Eisensturm fighter and its Omnifighter cousin, the EST-O Eisensturm.
The Clans' masters of heavy fighter design and production for centuries, the Ghost Bears could not help but be shocked by an Inner Sphere fighter that not only aerobatically outperformed their heavy fighters, but carried unparalleled protection.
It was clear that Clan Ghost Bear would need to step forward again and supply the clans with a new heavy fighter. The daunting specifications handed to the Clan's Scientist Caste called for a vessel with the maneuverability of a Visigoth and armor to rival the Eisensturm. Firepower was de-prioritized, recognizing the Eisensturm's own weak weapons configuration and comparatively small pod space.
The new fighter, dubbed "Cimmerian" after an obscure tribe from ancient Terra, was first deployed in 3069, and fought its first combat engagement in 3070. Given the ambitious nature of the design, it is unsurprising that it faced considerable technical difficulties in earlier models, legends of which continue to plague the new fighter even as they grow more common in the Ghost Bear and Snow Raven toumans.
Production continues unabated, and scientist caste and Dominion SAAB officials continue to insist that the fighter is now "virtually trouble-free."
==Capabilities:== Equipped with the largest transat/aviation fusion engine available for aerospace fighters, the Cimmerian is true to its design specifications by achieving the same crushing 5.5G peak acceleration that is the most celebrated feature of the smaller Visigoth, and overpowering the larger Eisensturm's comparatively paltry 4.5G maximum delta-v, both in terms of maneuverability and in simple raw thrust.
Though based partly on the Clan's highly successful Jengiz omnifighter, the Cimmerian features an improved wing design as well as an expanded engine housing, perhaps the product of the Clan's own experiences with air-to-ground missions during the Invasion and subsequent conflicts or perhaps thanks to input from the Clan's new Rasalhague-trained engineers. Either way, the new fighter is much more capable in atmospheric operations, and many commanders actually prefer the Cimmerian to more heavily armed fighters for ground-support missions, despite its design intent as a high-maneuverability dogfighter.
The Cimmerian's protection also does not disappoint. With 18.5 tons of Clantech Ferro-Aluminum, the Cimmerian is the best-armored fighter in Clan service, also surpassing the effective protection of its Lyran rival. Pilots joke that it is unclear which would win in an encounter between a Cimmerian and a Planet -- after all, they say, the Cimmerian clearly has the edge in armor.
==Battle History:== Now in service for over thirty years, the Cimmerian has proved itself as the Clans' new heavy/multipurpose aerospace superiority fighter in numerous engagements, whether in Trials between the Clan's own Warriors or with rival Clans or battles with rebels and pirates. No Cimmerian has yet been lost as a consequence of enemy action.
==Variants:== Two variations exist on the basic Cimmerian chasis. One, a reconaissance variant, removes half of the fighter's heat-sinks in order to triple its basic fuel load. A full omnifighter system deemed unnecessary, the reconaissance Cimmerian operates a fixed modular equipment load, including advanced sensor and electronic countermeasures systems and a much-reduced weapon array based primarily on long-range missiles.
A second variant, intended for use in second-line postings, drops the massive extralight engine system for a less sophisticated model originally designed by Dominion SAAB for commercial use.
Maneuverability is reduced considerably in this variant, which also includes a fixed electronics package and a doubled internal fuel load.
==Deployment== Though the Cimmerian is a common sight in Ghost Bear and Snow Raven ground-support wings, it was primarily intended for fleet service, and the bulk of the most modern Cimmerians serve with the Ghost Bear fleet aboard its massive Leviathan-class Superdreadnoughts.
Clan Wolf has comparitively recently acquired production rights to the Cimmerian and is known to field at least a trinary of the advanced fighter.

Never lost to enemy action...have the Ghost Bears been sticking within their borders?
It's an interesting fighter, though I like the version with the 320-rated SFE and more fuel. More fuel = more delta-V, which can trump an extra thrust point.

Any chance of getting the HMAero files for these?

Yeah, as soon as I have internets at home. Kinda spinning my wheels until then.

I stole that fun stat from the air superiority versions of the F-15. It seemed appropriate, given the Cim's armoring and maneuverability.
But yeah, there hasn't been much border movement since the 3060s in TSA, and that partly accounts for that. FWIW, pilots in the same Clan don't count as "enemy," and the Cim has yet to face the Eisensturm in non-simulated combat. :P

Operationally, yes. Tactically, no.
I tend to avoid fuel loads much over the 5-ton line. Not only do they compromise tactical performance, but the same reasons that make omni-podding fuel impractical (and annoyingly illegal) also suggest that over-large fuel loads on any fighter would be awkward.

Well, yes, a 5-ton tank of liquid hydrogen is the size of a large van. It's hard to fit them in BT's sleek and compact fighters.
