Attached (as an downloadable attachment) is a picture of a mini that will be similiar that I'll be putting together for a starport/starpase. The only real difference will be that the center piece will be a larger ring with weapon batteries. I will be designing it in HMAero but would like some thoughts/opinions, if there are any.
Some of my design specs: Each of the outer "rings" will be of equal size and the combined size of the three will be equal or less than that of the center "ring." Each of the outer rings will possess point defense weapons and possibly SRM and troops. Other than that, each will have its own unique roll. Each of the outer rings will only have three usable arcs because of docking clamps and positioning in relationship to the other rings. The center ring will have use of all six arcs and it is assumed that the outer rings will not interefere with its firing.
Defensive structure (center): Internal docking for fighters and small craft, capital weapons, a few standard weapons Craft repair (outer): 100-ton repair facilities, 1000?-ton repair facilities Vessel repair (outer): warship-class repair facilities Living section (outer): living quarters, cargo bays/storage

Interesting. How big in overall size is this compared to the warship miniatures and such?

Got the minis today...Each is about the size of a hex. The pieces are interchangable and fit tightly, so I won't be gluing them together.

The next four messages will be the designs for each module. I figured that this would be better than having one real long message.
I’m trying to run a campaign with my nephew, but with his activities, “try” becomes the key word here. The planet, above which this station will be orbiting, has a large germanium mine, thus he’ll have a continuous income flow. So, he’ll have to buy this space station (in pieces) and I didn’t want it overly expensive.
Originally, I wanted the station to be symmetrical: Sum(A=B=C)=<D. Though, realistically, I don’t think that “has” to be true: (A not equal to B not equal to C) => or <= D. I used pre-existing designs as a basis for these designs and I may have added a few things that weren’t really necessary, removed a few things that I shouldn’t have removed and/or been off on my sizes/quantities, so I do welcome constructive criticism.
First, the living module (A) was designed. This has a lot of cargo space, which is basically a “wild card” for various unlisted space, living quarters, etc. that would be needed as well as standard cargo. I felt that a crew of a thousand would be sufficient. Normally, short-ranged weapons should be used for point defense, but seeing that this is a stationary object, medium-ranged weapons would be better used here. And I didn’t want anything larger or numerous because that would draw too much attention to these modules.
The craft repair module (B) was made to have room so that 1000-ton crafts and 100-ton fighters could dock inside and be repaired. The pressurized repair facility, landing bays and doors are interconnected.
The vessel repair module (C) was made with an unpressurized facility such that warships could dock with it and repairs could be made externally.
I originally designed the defensive module (D) such that Sum(A=B=C)=D. But after seeing the price tag, I dropped that thought and reduced the module’s size. I believe that by cutting the total mass from the original 15,000 tons, I chopped 1/2 billion C-bills off the cost. I’d still like to trim cost, but I don’t know where to do so and I don’t want to compromise the defenses any further. The main reduction occurred in the weapons armament, but it still will deter single warships and can quickly take out fighters. Armor on this and the other modules may seem heavy, but it needs to withstand attacks from warships or a prolonged engagement with a fleet of fighters. This unit also contains a decent standing military force that can be deployed throughout the station quickly.

That's a bit big on the AT2 scale. An AT2 hex is about 18km across. The largest AT2 station is 2.5 million tons, which would fit well at the 2-5km scale.
Or did you mean the mini is about the size of a hex on the map?
25000-ton modules sound very manageable. They'd be easy enough to import by dropship or jumpship.
Though note that a 100m-diameter gravdeck is a little small - it would have to spin at 3rpm to generate 0.5G, and 3rpm is edging into a zone that experiments [ref available on request] have shown can be unsettling to some people. A 200m gravdeck would generate 1G at 3rpm. (You'd want a 1700-1800m gravdeck to get down into the stomach-safe 1rpm/1G levels.)
I'm impressed with the big guns you fit onto the rather small defensive module.
