Primary Factory: Soul Communications System: Sony MSF-21 Targeting and Tracking System: Wayne Marksman
Overview: Back in the early- to mid-3020s, a group of ambitious young "visionaries" banded together with a single motivating purpose...to revolutionize the modern battlefield with radical new Battlemech design concepts. They eventually formed Johnson 'Mechworks, Inc., a small, short-lived design firm known only for a handful of notoriously off-the-wall 'Mech blueprints. Like many startups, they were best known for their failures, and the company folded without ever selling a single design or constructing a single functional 'Mech, but the recent "rebirth" of the company has resulting in an unearthing of many designs thought to be lost. One of the first was the ETU-2S Etruscan, a lumbering brute of an assault 'Mech that nevertheless shows much potential...for the battlefield of that time. While current military technology renders the design hopelessly obsolete, it still stands as a strong testament to the creative potential of even the most disturbed mind...
Capabilities: The original Etruscan was designed as a long-range fire-support 'Mech, but much attention was given to plugging the perennial weaknesses of such "specialty" 'Mechs as the venerable Archer and Awesome. The first issue was mobility...the sheer cost of 300+ ton-rated engines limited the Etruscan to its current speed, but a set of massive Smithson Lifters Jump Jets allow it to maintane a respectable pace in tough terrain or the dreaded urban environment. Also, the design was loaded up with close-range weaponry to deal with anything rushing inside minimum range of the primary weapons. Four SperryBrowning machine guns deter infantry from even attempting to approach, and rear-mounted lasers protect the always-vulnerable rear arc against speedy flankers. All in all, a potent, versatile package, easily a match for any of the familiar assault 'Mech designs of the era.
Known Variants: Only the above configuration was drawn up by the original design team, but the current crop at JMInc. have cooked up an impressive refit with more up-to-date technology. If they are successful at getting funding, the refitted Etruscan definitely has the potential to become the Assault 'Mech standard of tomorrow's battlefield.

And the above mentioned refit:
ETU-5N Etruscan
Mass: 85 tons Chassis: Wells 990 Power Plant: Core Tek 255 XL Cruising Speed: 32.25 Maximum Speed: 53.75 Jump Jets: Smithson Lifters Jump Capacity: 90 meters Armor: Durallex Special Heavy with CASE Armament: 2 Shigunga LRM 15s 4 Diverse Optics Type 20 Medium Lasers 8 SperryBrowning Machine Guns 3 Magna Quasar Medium Pulse Lasers 1 Thunderbolt-12 Large Pulse Laser Manufacturer: Johnson 'Mechworks Inc. Primary Factory: Soul Communications System: Sony MSF-21 Targeting and Tracking System: Wayne Marksman
Overview: When the JMInc. archivist first unearthed the ETU-2S Etruscan, the immediate reaction was unanimous shock and awe. As the design was being submitted to the list of "The 100 Greatest 'Mechs That Never Were," that reaction turned to, "Damn, we gotta update this beauty!" And update it they did. While the use of an XL Engine creates an uncomfortable vulnerability (and results in a price tag more than double the original), the new 5N model is significant at range, and an unholy terror up close. In other words...eeeeeeexxxxxcellllennnnnnnnt!
Capabilities: How to Turn an Obsolete Relic Into an Efficient Engine of Destruction In 10 Easy Steps: 1) Replace standard power plant with XL model, freeing up 6.5 tons. 2) Replace 20 standard Heat Sinks with 13 DHS freeing up 7 tons. 3) Use CASE to protect LRM ammo in the torso. 4) Add Artemis IV Fire Control to the LRM pair. 5) Replace PPC with Large Pulse Laser. 6) Supplement existing close range fire with 3 Pulse Lasers. 7) Double stockpile of Machine Gun ammo. 8) Double number of Maching Guns. 9) Give the result a snazzy new paint job. 10) Brag to all your friends That pretty much sums it up...although the loss of the PPC somewhat reduces long-range punch, Artemis IV FCS on the LRMs partly makes up for it. However, the true strength of the refit is close-range punch -- three extra lasers and an obscene number of machine guns makes the ETU-5N a deadly close-range fighter that's likely to shine in an urban environment.
Known Variants: The refit crew produced a single variant for the new model, one which preserves a bit more of the Etruscan's original presence. The 7L variant retains the PPC, now upgraded to an ER version, instead of the Large Pulse Laser. Space requirements unfortunately require removing CASE from the Left Torso, the tonnage saved being used to maximize the leg armour.

Shiro's Wyverns would like to order a good company. You have your funding Johnson!
In other words, a nice Urban Fire Support Desgin, and you're right, the Level 1 version is pretty nasty for 3026

I like this thing, it has something for everybody.
Eight Machine Guns though, granted that 16 damage for zero heat at 90 meters, but Honestly, are you out to slaughter regiments of Infantry?

Ummm...yeah, that's the general idea...even a handful of platoons can be a nightmare in a city if you're not equipped to deal with them
Besides, MGs are like lava lamps...you can never have too many.

Nice...got to love these...Solaris 7 won't be the same with these running around. Heck I can see merc units using these to take WOB.

Time to bump some vintage JMInc.!

For shame. No mention of hand actuators.
Nice to learn the company isn't in business to make money. Just there for the designers to slap things together.
Few suggestions. The original might be slightly better off with one of the mls moved from the to left torso. Firing arc comes to mind. Yes, the PPC is much better then the ml, but just a thought. The upgraded version might stand to lose an ml for extra lrm ammo. 16 shots with both is much better then 12 shots. Especially when you are using them for long range support. Glow in the dark comes to mind when firing at close range. Another thought would be ermls.
Took me a while to figure out you really dug into the past for this one.

Quote: For shame. No mention of hand actuators.
I was using The Drawing Board back when I designed this one. Unlike SSW, it doesn't list minor details like Actuators on the printout. I have to dig up my old TDB files to be sure, but IIRC, all the actuators were removed...definitely on the Upgrade due to lack of space.

They were always in business to maje money...the original company just wasn't very good at it...

The original has 2 of the MLs Rear-mounted (also not indicated in the printout)

Not a bad idea. I also considered in the ERPPC variant to gree up the needed crit space by trading 2 MLs for a single MPL instead of removing the CASE.
Quote: Another thought would be ermls.
This one is a 3050 redesign, so no ERMLs yet. Although the extra heay would be a but uncomfortable...in runs hot in close as it is.

I do have a few from 2001 I could bump up...
EDIT: Found it...Hand Actuators removed, Lower Arm Actuators present.
