Notification System

This has probably been posted before, but I was thinking about the ongoing debate in this forum between defenders and attackers, like in the anti-IDF thread. Since the most effective defense in Neveron has classically been to stall the attacker until the defender can log in and begin to counterattack, the game could be much more balanced if we had an attack notification system. Basically it would be an automailer that sends a short email to a player when their empire is under attack.

For those of us who don't check email very often, that wouldn't help much. If you really want to be notified, they could have a system tray icon that gives a pop up similar to the nevcrawl. Like those programs that tell you when you've got an email.
I'm not saying you have a bad idea, nor that my idea is for everyone (especially if you don't have the processing power to spare), but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I know. I'm saying it would be nice to have sort of a neveron version of that.

A system tray icon would be more immediate, but email would be easiest for the admins - there's already an option to enter an email address for a particular login and a gamewide system to announce attacks. They'd just need a server program to monitor that and email the defending empire's address. I'm not a programmer, so that in itself might be more complex than I'm aware of. However, I think it would balance the game somewhat, and email is a fairly universal out-of-game communication system; what the player does with the info is up to them. You could probably use a Thunderbird extension to sort messages from Nev into one folder, and have it pop up an alert whenever you recieve one.

Or you could just always have at least 1 internet explorer open and just refresh the page every so often. What good is an email if you aren''t there to read it? And if you are there to read it, then refer to my suggestion.

I don't know a lot about computers, but I know that they would be having to send out lots of e-mails. Besides, your factionmates get the attack message for you. If it's that important, give them your phone number to call you when you come under attack.
