Reducing Graphic Downloads
      #125585 - 02/17/06 02:58 AM (12.72.150.82)

Since we are downloading those verisign things anyway, I was thinking it may be beneficial if admins offer a choice between loading neveron's graphics from the internet OR loading neveron's graphics saved on the player's hard drive.

All admin really need to do is offer the graphic images of neveron in a compressed file so players can saved the images in a specified location (such as C:\neveron\) and add some code to switch between local and hosted image loading. Since it is all regular GIFs or JPEGs, I doubt the community will have an uproar, I could be wrong.

For the Admin, this may reduce their bandwidth use since people will not be loading those unit icons or map hexes each and everytime.

For the players, this means no more download graphics errors (like in arenas) and possibly eliminate "invisible" players without refreshing (newly joined) in the FFA tournament and even faster page load times since it does not download the images (especially for modem users)... better gaming experience.

For home players, image heavy pages load faster. For netcafe users, the images can still be loaded from the internet so they dont have to download anything.

Something for everyone, right?

Another game has implemented this idea. http://space.coldfirestudios.com/

To see this switching system firsthand, join it and go to "main" and then select "settings" Image location settings and near the bottom...

"
Download file at [zip file address here] unzip it, install it, and then click button below to use downloaded graphics to speed up your game and move lower load on our servers.

If you are going to go to another machine without images loaded locally, set images to load from our servers or images will be broken.

"

also, if we upgrade and get "prettier" graphics, we should be careful not to get carried away with large images (large file sizes) since there are still modem players.

Then again, i'm no programmer and easier said than done.

Eh, thats it. What you think?

Been suggested frequently, Admins say it isn't a drain on resources.

That's because the admins keep looking at it as a thread and bandwidth issue, which they aren't capping out their resources. If they were to look at it from a file access performance issue on their HD array, they would find that nine out of ten performance engineers would say 'yes, an image pack will improve your application's overall performance'. And remember, there's at least one idiot in every field of work to explain away that tenth guy.

Hehe, it isn't a drain on server side resources, but for slower connections it might be on client side.

I did notice a remarkable difference in loading speed on 2 different computers on same connection, since processing power seems more of a limit than i/o. And since modem users can generally be said to use an older computer..

Lag in this game does not come from downloading grpahics. It comes from accessing the database or the HTTP servers getting overloaded. (They recently added one and things did get better)

The only way that will improve is adding more servers and improving code efficiency (which WW and Randy work on a daily basis)

Lag is database oriented and/or rendering large battle maps on your IE browser, which is not very efficient. While it would be fun for people to customize their graphics, "all we would need to do" is alter every image link in the game and make it so every page knows whether it should be loading off of our server or your computer. Not an impossible task but our time is better spent on other things right now.

True, graphics are not downloaded anymore since they're cached by IE. The problem is, that even if your internet explorers setting of checking for newer versions of stored pages is "automatic", it will way too frequently send requests to see if the image was modifed, only to receive a "Not Modified" response, which of course takes time. And it is easier to solve this issue at client side rather than fixing all links, so if someone really wants that little speed improvement, use some kind of proxy;)

BUT .. if the GFX were on your HD then they could be also be more detailed ? I'd definately be up for d/l 'ing GFX even if they only improved my client performance by 10 percent, would be even cooler if the GFX were also more detailed.

Not essential but nice to have
