Infantry: whats the point?

I'm relatively a noob to neveron and its come to my attention that the best low level units to buy would be vehicles. However there seems to be alot of different types of infantry and it seems like they should be used, but their cost and effectiveness just doesn't seem worth the time.
Are there really reasons for having infantry? If so, what are they good for and how should a noob like me use them.
Thanks

Infantry is ussefull in 4 ways (unsless i forget something):
First one is as drop zone takers: they cannot get hurt by a hot drop and they allways beat a stealth tower in ABR so ussually droping a infantry in the middle of enemy territory grants you a drop zone in 30 minutes withouth risking a mech in the hot drop.
This is posible the most important use of infantry, for doing it you need any kind of jumping infantry (rifle is the best since its cheaper)
second use is as speedbumps, most people use low cost units for holding zones while attacking, a platoon of infantry riflemen would cost you around 50000 and the cheapest vehicle will cost you like 140000, the problem is that infantry will route if doubled in BV by enemy force if its skill is 8, some people therefore prefer to use geckos or jeeps instead of infantry, also big empires (lvl 11 and above) use infantry becouse its easier to move 1 infantry than 1 vehicle when you have 500 infantry in your empire and 5000 vehicles (less lag time although i supose that will not mather to you).
The third use is as ABR fighters, a batallion of infantry will cost you like 1.7 millions and it will beat almost all forces you should encounter in teh open in ABR, in deed a single lance usually is able to do, infantry in ABR do not route but will do if any enemy battleplayer enters teh battle and he has any serious units in there, this not a real problem if yoiu can fight 2 or 3 ABR battles before finding the enemy forces since they will probably skill down in the first battles.
The 4th use is as ammo depleters or fatiging force, infantry take reduced damage from lasers (only one infantry each laser) and CA (half damage from CA) although they take double damage from missiles also they take double damage if in teh open (no building, woods or dificult terrain in their ex) therefore they are ussefull when you trying to take a heavy defended city if they are ussing IDF weapons, get your infantry into buildings and let them fire at them until they run out of ammo, if they dont run out you can attack again with another battallion and in any case their units will have been in battle and therefore theyll be fatigued when your real units came to the fray(fatigue is a rule that penalice units skills after being in battle for long time, to get -1 penality to all skills a unit must have been in combat a bit more than 30 minutes (personal experience) to get a -2 penality a unit must have been in combat a lot of time a -3 penality is posible but extremelly rare (any feedback on this numbers are wellcome since im interested ).
hope i didnt forget anything.

the use as speedbump will be obsolete soon though. Admins are planning instant ABR if the defenders bv is lower than 500. Gotta pull up quite a lot of infantry speedbumps per zone to get together 500 bv :-)

ramataplan - it's possible to have Fatigue 6 (+5/+5 to skills). FWLM sieged a city to this skill (units had negative BV). Then fatigue reset... which is unsurpsiging because fatigue 6 meant it had worked for over 12hrs, and nothing on Nev is allowed to do that.

That platoon's going to be a lot more expensive. Assuming you have at least 1 unassigned soldier standing around and you already have the weaponry for a platoon, creating the platoon will still cost another $270k to hire the other 27 soldiers in the platoon. You can buy 2 G3Xs and the untrained soldiers to drive them for that price.
Still, your other points are all valid. A nicely trained company of inf can do some nasty damage in ABR when joined by other units.

Most people don't buy untrained soldiers, just draft them for free.

before SOI inf was my ace in defense. keep one or two lances in tent towns, to really slow down attackers, while city art hits em. in the main defense zone one or two comps zhukovs, idf towers, and nasty 2 bats of flamer jump. they're pretty sniper resistant. in a 1k building city they get lots of cover, and if they swarm your units you're in your worst nightmare.
SOI changes this.

I'm not contentious.. not saying your wrong.. just wondering at your logic here? How does SOI change that?

because of SOI i can't put 2 additional lances of inf in a tent city, as i would need soi zones. the same for the real defense zone, if i got two extra bats of inf there its another 72 units, requiring 18 more SOI zones.
