FFA proposition

Personally mainly entered the FFA for the odd TP to be gained. With the removal of TP from neg ID units, there is to my knowledge no way to obtain them other than trough production.
I both present a way to make me enter FFA more often, and return TP to the general auience (in a way).
Every entry in FFA gives a person a lottery ticket. At the end of a set period, preferentially 1ce a nevmonth, a winner is drawn. The winner will get a random prize, ranging from small (5 mill, 1 TP) to grande (a random unit, a free (random) building, 1000 TP).
Just to envigorate the FFA.
As an incentive to arena's, just 1 TP incase of a win in the arena's would also increase participation there, as there are times no single arena is availlable to enter.

sounds alright, maybe with a few corrections on the numbers. Making normal arenas more attractive should have absolute priority though, imho. Those are pretty much paralytic these days. I was thinking about changing the enrollment bonus a bit, as that's often so pathetically low that admins might as well leave it out. Lets face facts: Noobs don't REALLY learn how to fight properly in FFA. I observed that regularly, with empires that fight FFA for months on end and still seem to have no idea about init, heat management or weapon specifications. It's the fight against an evenly matched non-AI opponent that makes you learn how to fight or perish in the attempt. We learned it the hard way, back when arenas were still deadly for the loser. It's all a matter of motivation :-)

The FFA was never intended as a TP factory and the award of TP was an unintended byproduct, mostly removed from the FFA. The FFA is supposed to give new players a taste of battle. If you want to research you should build some research facilities.

It might not have been intended as a TP factory, but for some players (me anyway) it was the main reason for entering FFA. Just funds as reward are not nearly as much fun.

And bring back the tournies. They were good as they were but the requirements were just bad. Like 10+ empires were really rare, also too much bv. I would love to do those tournies with 3-6 empires and 100-1000 bv at levels 3-8. I don't care losing the units too as it was. I could get rid of my stabled mechs there ;-)

yeah, and let's face it - for low level empires the attempt to raise funds with FFA is pointless anyway. Life expectancy and firepower/skill of lower level units aren't high enough to get out ahead. I understand WW's point, that FFA is mostly made for learning, but close observation of behavior in FFA, or of people you know mostly from excessive FFA and who find their way into a normal arena now and then, leads me to conclude that the learning curve from FFA is actually pretty level.

I totally agree. The matter of slightly changing the numbers in the tournie creation code was proposed before though, by myself in fact, and to randy directly even, back in the golden age when he was in chat and occasionally listened to players' concerns :-). I always found tournies with the right settings quite a lot of fun, and I was disappointed when this change, which would afford like 3 minutes of... ahem... coding, never went into effect. That way, it was just a matter of time till the tournies died their slow and undeserved death.

Hehe, well... you can do that in real arenas as well, you know... And if you don't suck too much, you can in fact earn some cash doing so.

I concur. Bring back TP's.
It would be interesting to look at the number of people who actually use FFA now that there are no TP's. A very significant drop no doubt.
On a positve note -
CF/Mini Surrender is a great addition to the game. Thankyou Admins.
