Not Surrendering
      #132753 - 06/21/06 03:56 PM (68.96.178.49)

My empire was attacked and lost 75 percent of its lands, total pop and bv. It should have surrendered, but didn't.

I asked around in chat and got an answer. Once the attacking empire tried to attack another zone, surrender was triggered.

Yeah. For everyone else who might have a question like this:

Surrender triggers once your losses are at or over the surrender threshold. As a result there are a couple obvious ways that you can take heavier losses than your surrender rate indicates:

Example 1)

You have a lot of BV defending a city and you are already close to your surrender rate. The attacker attacks the city and kills all the BV, surrendering you part way through the battle but not getting the city. He can stay in battle until he retreats because surrender does not end current battles, so depending on your surrender rate he can cause a lot of extra dammage before he leaves even if you surrender part way through.

Example 2)

You are close to surrender at the end of a battle in a large city, and he captures the city. Because you weren't surrendered before the end of the battle, he will get the city regardless of how much it will cause you in losses. Thus if you are close to surrender he will take your city and can quite possibly cause your losses to jump significantly from capturing the zone (this is much more likely if you are small).

These are both more likely to happen in smaller empires, just because a little bit of loss can account for a large chunk of the empire. As you get larger, you can asorb more losses without it accounting for a large portion of your empire. One thing that is pretty true is that your empire is most vunerable when it is small (especially now that attack costs are free, before smallness gave a measure of protection since attack costs made it less proffitable to attack small guys). Until your empire gets to level 7 (or so) you are very vunerable since you cannot asorb much in the way of losses, and at such a low level it is very easy to cripple an empire beyond repair. As a result you should try to have 5 empires at all times when starting out since you can expect a high failure rate of your lower level empires.
