The SAMAS was introduced by the Sirian Holds to bolster their meager defensive forces, which consisted of a merc mech battalion (Sirius) and a merc mech regiment (Procyon). Though both planets are regarded as agricultural backwaters, Procyon's population of more than 5 billion, extensive petroleum and gemstone reserves, and abandoned but largely undamaged Star League-era industrial facilities represented a great deal of wealth. And even if most of 5 billion people on the planet are farmers, how different is that from Terra in 1980? A small fraction of the population was industrialized and reasonably educated, and did invest in recovering technology from the Star League memory core. . How much technology was recovered by Procyon was not obvious until 3057, when Comstar news crews captured the new Procyon battle armors aiding "Sirian Government in Exile" reclaim their planet from a delusion ex-Comstar acolyte and his cult. The resulting alliance between the two worlds is known as the Sirian Holds and is considered one of the most stable of the Chaos March worlds. (Sirius, distinctly the junior member in the alliance in fact if not in public opinion, got to put its name on the alliance's stationary as a consolation prize to ceding foreign and military policy control to Procyon.) Unlike other Chaos March worlds, the Sirian Holds do not have to worry about food. The Holds are also linked by a credible jumpship fleet of about 2 dozen government-owned jumpships, another advantage over other Chaos March mini-nations. The Holds' jumpship fleet was bolstered with the confiscation of the trading fleet of the Gyrns, an ancient Sirian trading family who's blacksheep child (believing himself to be reincarnated Jerome Blake) led the rebellion of 3057. Since then, however, the Sirian Holds' jumpship fleet is larger than can be accounted for from foreign purchases. Sirius was known to have a jumpship research facility during the Star League era, but it was thought to have been destroyed during the Amaris Coup. On the other hand, this facility is the only reasonable explanation for the growing Sirian Holds' jumpship fleet. . While the Sirian Holds have their share of poor judgement and regulations by their leadership, the current batch of rulers is intelligent enough to continue several policies. First, subsidizing education throughout the poorer, backwater sections of both Sirius and Procyon. Sirius's literacy has climbed from 54% to 84% among its children in the decade since its been in the Holds; Procyon's literacy rate is up 5% to 87% overall. Continued offers of low-interest business development loans for development of Star League technologies is having a profound effect. This latter policy was begun in 3034, when Procyon received its first copy of the Star League memory core. Many of the Holds' citizens are nothing more than (by 21st Century standards) subsistence level farmers, but the hundreds of millions who live in the developing cities are benefiting from a technological boom, and this is leaching into the rural regions. . When the Word of Blake reached the "backwater" Sirian Holds in 3070 (a low priority target), it was in for a rude surprise. The Brigadier Corporation mech factories of Procyon were still quiet, but the conventional armor legions of the Sirian Holds were huge and backed with new, disturbing forms of battle armor. (Plus, those fighter wings could scare off any lone warship.) . It seems the Clans weren't the only makers of VTOL battle armor, and the Federated Suns was a little curious how the Holds got those Mag Shot rifles. . ==Capabilities:== This medium battle armor is lightly armed and armored compared to even the Inner Sphere standard battle armor, but it has a high ground speed and its twin 375-kilowatt vectored thrust fans give it surprising aerial agility (if not much in the way of aerial speed). It has an exceptional thermograph mounted on the left shoulder, including a powerful, stabilized telescopic lense. . ==Battle History:== While the SAMAS is far from the most potent battle armor fielded, it is numerous. The Syrian Holds have built entire battle armor infantry regiments out of the SAMAS. In such large numbers, their firepower is devastating...to unsuspecting mechs in urban areas. Their greatest successes have been in raids against WoB encampments, where the armored, nimble infantry slaughtered unprotected WoB soldiers in their tents. Unsporting, perhaps, but the attacks were only feasible with the SAMAS's mobility. Their heat sensor was also useful in urban combat, where it could see through light walls and track down WoB guerillas. . ==Variants:== The SAMASS (SAMAS, Scout) ditches the Mag Shot and heat sensor for Improved Sensors, a Remote Sensors package, and another 10kph of VTOL speed. The SHAMAS (Syrian Heavy blah blah blah) trades 10kph of VTOL speed and the Mag Shot for a medium recoilless rifle. . ------------------------------------------------------------------ Type/Model: SAMAS Equipment: Slots Mass Chassis Type: Medium Class Humanoid 0 175 Motive System: Ground Movement (3 MP) (Clan) 0 80 VTOL Equipment (4 MP) 0 240 Armor Type: 7 Points Advanced 5 280 .
