Sorry about the fluff length. I came up with this years ago while on a bus trip at about 2 am because I could not sleep. Somehow five ER Large Lasers on a maligned design sounded like a good idea at the time...

After the early success of Zellbrigen Stables lead to rocky times becasue of rocky management, Marcin Hammond of Clan Diamond Shark came on the scene to become the unoffical manager of the stable. With a buissness plan that would do any Steiner proud he also brought with him some of the best experimental tech the Clans have to offer in order to facilitate his stables rise to the top. One such peice of equipment is the massive Clan XXL engine. While extremly large it is incredibly light, weighing as much as engines with only 73% as much power. Such a marvel required a 'mech to match, so Hammond asked IDC-who worked on the Prowler Project-to assist him.

They submited several concepts to him that used the new plant. One that caught Hammonds eye was a total redesign of the Charger. The only problem was the need for Clan endo steel in the design. Calling in several favors from Khan Bjorn Jorgensson of Clan Ghost Bear, Hammond was able to aquire a built to-spec skeleton for his new terror. A rusting hulk pulled from the Scrapyard provided most of the actuators, sensors, life support systems as well as a functional gyro and most of the wiring which would prove a problem later on.

To replace the small lasers of the origional, IDC chose Clan ER Large Lasers as they would easily fit where once meer toys sat. However problems arouse during testing when the power couplings simultaneously burnt up, which could have killed the entire project. The 'mech was repaired and totaly re-wired. To compensate for the incredible amount of heat generated by the five Clan lasers, a plethora of double-strength heat sinks were incorperated. The shear number of heat sinks caused a plumbing nightmare, even using recovered Star Leauge design computers. Even with an unprecedednted number of heat sinks, the 'mech still suffers from the effects of heat if the pilot does not manage it.

The only weak point in the design thus far has been its armor. Though mounting a full ton and a half more than a -1A1, protection is still light. However it is felt that the increased range of its weapons negates that factor.

Battle History
The Charger IIIC's first battle took place in the Mud Pit where its long-range ability laid waste to a Cudgel. Experts are quick to point out that in a more close-in fight the results would have been very different. In a battle in the Pool, the Charger IIIC was modified by removing three heatsinks and incorperating HarJel systems to protect the vulnerable and expensive engine. The odds-on favorite to win was the Aquagladius. Again, the superior range, even under water won the day, when the armor of the center torso yielded to the Clan Lasers, flooding the reactor.

Variants
Several variants are being discussed by IDC to increase the survivability of the 'mech. A composite skeleton is currently being fabricated with a few refinements. The chest of the 'mech is easily removed to access the massive engine to facilitate swaps between Charger IIIC chassis as currently Zellbrigen stables only possess one of these power palnts. The endo steel chassis is expected to be modified in a similar manner. The space freed up by the composite structure will be used to mount ferro-fibrous armor. One configuration mounts patch work armor with hardened armor in the head. Another mounts all over ferro fibrous, removes a heat sink and in its place is mounted a supercharger. While the outter shell has been strengthened, it has yet to be seen if the weak inside is worth it.

However, the most common modification is to mount ER Medium Pulse Lasers in place of the arm-mounted Large Lasers. This facilitates the addition of a supercharger, near maximum armor and a targeting computer with the removal of several heat sinks. Another low-cost alternative is to use standard Medium Pulse Lasers, remove more heatsinks, add ferro fibrous armor and mount a cheaper Clan XL 400 engine.
