Sacrifice of disciples
      #139563 - 11/10/06 03:03 PM (129.138.37.207)

After several (nev) years of inactivity, the Demons are on the hunt once more. This is the tale of their latest exploits.

It was supposed to be a simple raid: hit hard and fast and slip away into the night. Instead of a mostly abandoned outpost, the forward scouts discovered a training camp for the militant terrorist faction known as Havoc's Harrassers. The reports showed relatively green mech pilots (none above single digit repuations) training on some of the most advanced mechs on the planet. If allowed to complete their training, these units would present a neigh-unstoppable force. The scouts had identified a Nemesis, two assault-class Marauders, two gauss-variant Highlanders a Victor, a Griffin and a small number of artillery units. The attackers later discovered a Paladin as well. The main base sat on a flat plain at the edge of a dense forest that would provide ample protection from the long-range weaponry for attacking forces.

The plan was simple. Enter the forest with all possible haste and use superior gunnery skills and maneuverability to negate the enemy's vastly superior firepower. The problem was that the attacking force consisted of just 9 mechs and the "Disciples of the Light" an 10-sniper artillery unit. The mechs averaged just 65 tons compared to 85tons for the defending 8 mechs and carried much lower tech weaponry.

As the battle unfolded, the unreadiness of the enemy pilots for battle became apparent (AI). The victor rushed ahead of its comrade's supporting fire and faced the concentrated attackers alone. The powerful mech quickly became a ball of fire, smoke and debris when its ammunition exploded. The Disciples of the Light moved forward to provide supporting fire with both LRMs and artillery. They took position just outside of a small clearing in the forest that gave them just enough range and cover to make use of their weaponry from a stationary position. This allowed them to also utilize their artillery tubes on more distant targets.

Apparently stunned by the sudden demise of their comrade, the trainees refused to close beyond extreme range with the attacking force. The griffin attempted to move forward using the trees as cover, and The Light sent his XO, Loki, in his Starslayer alone to deal with the flanking threat. After several minutes of long-range weapons exhanges, the Paladin was near destruction. Suddenly one of the highlanders broke formation and charged toward the Demons and their supporting snipers. He was too late to save his comrade who died seconds later in another ball of high-explosive fire. A Demon SHD-2K too damaged to continute the fight retreated from the field of battle.

The Demon 'mechs concentrated their fire on the enraged highlander, attempting to bring it down before its gauss could rip gaping holes in too many more mechs. The lone assault 'mech of the attack force, an aging Cyclops, moved forward to absorb the brunt of the attack. As PPCs and missiles tore into the Highlander, gauss rounds put harmless dents in the Cyclops' thick leg and torso armor. Then a single silver sphere struck the Clops squarely in the head. His cockpit shattered and barely functional, it was all the stunned pilot could do to return fire. A single medium laser lanced cleanly through the weakened Highlander's cockpit armor, vaporizing the pilot. Shocked at his good fortune and not willing to risk having his eyes put out by flying debris, the Cyclops beat a hasty retreat.

All the while, the sniper artillery shells rained down on and around the Nemesis, slowly stripping armor from every location on the fearsome mech. The Nemesis remained stationary at its maximum range, beyond the PPCs and LRMs that made up most of the attackers's firepower and returned fire at the artillery units. The two marauders, acting as his personal escort, remained out of the effective range of their PPCs for much of the fight.

The armor on mechs on all sides continued thinning as the battle continued. The Disciples began taking heavy casualties, but held their ground. A Demon Orion took a dangers cockpit hit and a catapult lost both of its LRM launchers, rendering it useless. Facing this steep reduction in available firepower, The Light chose to attempt field repairs while the Disciples performed a rear-guard action. In a parting gesture, his Loki touched off the ammunition in the enemy griffin before retreating at high speed towards the repair area. The Disciples focused their fire on the Nemesis and remaining Highlander, scoring numerous leg hits. In his last sitrep, the artillery commander reported seeing the Nemesis fall and the Highlander stumble and fall out of formation.

The Demon repair crews rushed around the 9 battle-scarred 'mechs conducting repairs on critically weakened head and chest armor, fixing damage weapons and reloading depleted magazines. In a miracle of repair-work, the 9 mechs returned to battle minutes after the last Disciples became a charred corpse. Filled with vengeance, the repaired Demons charged the two pristine marauders and engaged them on the open plain. The Light sent the Starslayer and a Griffin on a flanking maneuver to locate and destroy the heavily damaged Nemesis and Highlander. They found the highlander limping slowly to support the two marauders at the main battle while the Nemesis lay prone surrounded by a handful of snipers.

The first shot from the Starslayer severed what remained of the 732's leg, leaving the two speedy mechs free to terrorize the artillery and immobile mechs. The marauders again showed their unwillingness to close and began taking accurate LRM fire while trying vainly to hit infighters jumping around in trees. Loki quickly dispatched the helpless Nem and set about destroying the sniper artillery. The two marauders were relentless pounded by long range weapons. After the distruction of one of the marauders and most of the snipers, the enemy commander signalled his surrender. All that remained of his once-proud training cadre was a legless Highlander and an utterly crippled Marauder.
