A little story from the misguided jihad lauched by the Clans and other factions against HoC. Yep, ancient history for many players. I was a member of one of the factions that joined with the Clans for this disastrous war. Nice thing was HoC gave us terms and let us survive when they would have been entitled to wipe us out for our utter arrogance. Hence my soft spot for HoC.

Also in past role playing posts, I mentioned Ravi and in Nev Babes, Mad Mandy. So a brief story to introduce these two characters.

Anyway, enjoy the story and the picture download on this post. I rendered it in Bryce 6 and female figure was created in Poser 5 and exported as a Lightwave .OBJ to Bryce.

Shattered vehicles and destroyed mechs littered the zone. Ruined buildings were all that remained of a once proud city. As the setting sun turned the sky fiery red to match the slaughter that had occurred, Ravi sat in his new Warhammer 6R and pondered his survival.

The Clan inspired all out war against Harbingers of Chaos had been an unmitigated exercise in sheer incompetence. Poor coordination and planning coupled with the failure of many empires and factions to back up their bellicose proclaimations with action had led to HoC easily defeating the supposedly invincible hordes that would end HoC’s domination of Neveron.

Ravi had only just joined the forces of Confederation of Hope and his mech was fresh from the NASI marketplace when the war started. Not even enough time to paint unit and empire flashes on the monolith of death. Just the base factory paint, nothing more.

Ravi himself had gone straight from a training mech into the Warhammer and that was nearly his downfall. He had received a 10 minute brief from one of the technicians as they prepped the new addition to Hope’s forces and then he was on his own. On the drop ship voyage, he had studied the manuals but that was no substitute for actual combat experience. The Warhammer, often known by mech pilots as the Hot Hammer, did not have sufficient heat sinks to effectively fire all its weapons continuously. Careful management of heat was vital to its operation. And Ravi’s lack of experience had nearly killed him in this his first battle. He had got a rush of buck fever and continued to pour PPC fire into a crippled Atlas, ignoring the alarms as the heat rose rapidly. Before he realized, he had overheated the Warhammer and it had shut down. While he raged impotently at his own stupidity, the battle raged around him. Luckily none of the combatants targeted his mech while it was shut down. By the time his mech’s heat levels had reduced to a point where he could power up, the battle was almost over.

A sole Hunchback badly damaged was within range. Ravi aimed carefully and fired. The Hunchback shuddered and exploded, a plume of an ejector seat rocketing upwards fractionally before its demise.

Word then came in over the comm net that the war had ended. The empire and faction he belonged to had successfully sued for peace terms with HoC so he would live to serve another day. Checking his sensors he saw that he was the sole survivor of his lance.

Amanda, too was a inexperienced mech warrior. She had managed to eject just in time as her mech suffered a critical center torso hit and exploded. She crawled out of her seat and took off the neurohelmet, limping towards cover, stunned and deafened by the blast. The heavy vibrations through the ground alerted her to the presence of the Warhammer. She turned and saw the machine of death slowly moving through the ruined city. She froze in place, praying that the enemy mech pilot would not detect her, the sole living defender.

But Ravi had detected the lifeform of Amanda. He knew that it was the enemy mech warrior who had ejected and he decided to ignore her presence. To him, it would be dishonourable to kill the sole surviving enemy pilot who like him had fought so gallantly. Maybe they would meet again on the field of battle. Best let him or her think they had evaded him and he would report that he was the Sole Survivor.

Hey Hoppy, all I said was that I have a soft spot for HoC. Not that I think they are the best of all the factions. If I thought they were that great, I would not have stuck through thick and thin with LC, I would have joined HoC.

And to be brutally honest, I am sick to death of all this HoC bashing. OK ATM they are one of the dominant factions but that is no reason for all this irrational crap which people level at them.

One of the things that saddens me is this degeneration of people’s respect for their fellow players. Now, Hoppy, yes you have brought a lot of the grief upon yourself by your public mail and forum posts but that does not excuse other players when they cross the line insulting your girlfriend, school, education etc. If my problem is with you then I will respond to your argument. If I can not rationally respond, then I will shut up. Lately I have avoided the flame wars as I have nothing positive to contribute. And if you can't say something positive then IMHO don't say anything.

I have fought against HoC empires on several occasions. Some wars I have lost and some I have won. And no doubt in the future I may end up fighting HoC empires again.

My opinion of HoC for what it is worth is that I respect the faction as a whole and I hold them in high regard as warriors and I consider them quite trustworthy in my personal dealings with them. Note, I am speaking from my personal experiences. You obviously hold a totally different opinion and that is your right.

As stated before, I have good personal friends who are in HoC and also in other opposing factions. Now, that being said there are some complete bloody idiots in HoC as most factions are cursed with them as well. Not every HoC player is a great warrior in fact quite a few could be whipped by a Newbie without even breaking into a sweat. And the same goes for most factions.

Now the way, I play Neveron, is that I make the distinction between the player and the faction in my dealings with my fellow players. We role-play the faction but at the end of the day we are all fellow games enjoying the Neveron world. We share a common interest and that is what binds us together. I never say something in public mail or in the forums that I would not say to the player’s face in RL. I work on being nice to people and generally that pays huge dividends whether in Nev or RL.

Now am I nice in my role playing in Neveron? No, I am a dirty rotten stinking evil raider. Many players would regard my style of play as complete scum. I generally troll through the unfactioned empire list looking for victims to raid so it is of a little risk to me as possible. The best time to raid is after my prey comes out of surrender. In that point of view I am little better that a hyena waiting for crippled prey to feed on. I make no apologies for my style of play. Now if I get raided or DoWed as a result of my actions, that is my issue, it is not the faction or empire seeking revenge. Cult gave me an object lesson when I led a FWAR against a faction which had just come out of FWAR protection. Yep, all things considered, I deserved it and Cult was entitled to teach me some manners.

Now if I successfully raid someone, I never gloat and often will help my victim to rebuild or give him or her advice on how to defend. I don’t go out hating my opponents, I don’t need the stress of making unnecessary enemies. And on many occasions, those victims have become good friends.

If I lose, well that is my issue to deal with. I play this game, I accept the risks. This is a war game and there are many players who are far better at Nev than I ever will be. Those that beat me, well they have played better than me. I won't call them cheats.

And I regard chat as a room where I interact with my fellow players and I am invited there thus I watch my manners and language.

So now Hoppy, you know where I am coming from. You may consider me a dinosaur who believes in honour and courtesy and respect for my fellow players but remember this, I do not hate you as a person. I just wish you would show similar respect to your fellow players.

And with your current disagreement with HoC, maybe Hoppy, you should take the first step and be nice to them. It is all well and good to say they should make the first step but if both sides think the same thing, all that happens is the hatred gets worse and nothing ever positive comes of it. And that is just a crying shame.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha man...i tried that. I still do sometimes with people worth my time. Like Malachi, he's a very nice guy, understands I have a life to live and cuts me some slack and makes honorable deals and keeps the rest of HoC who would like to violate our deals from bein jerks. Anyway, I'm nice to some, but to most, well they're just things for me to vent on when i get stressed, so that people who DO matter to me never get me angry. It works like a charm :-D

Good story, Markon. Would you mind if I threw it in the Clan war section of the hoc archive as fanfic?

As well, I agree with you that its sad Nev's social culture has been so ruined. The old days, in many ways the deadlier days, were so much more civil, and more fun. As for HoC giving you leniency in your moment of defeat, well that's pretty much standard HoC procedure if you look at the trend of wars past. Or used to be the standard when diplomacy was a valid option (fwar now pretty much negates that). LIFE, WoB, Kizo, Nev Com, Clans, all of them had their head on the chopping block at least once during the last three and a half years and every time HoC stopped the blade from cutting bone. Because it was more fun to have an enemy than a memory. It was always nice when the same courtesy was shown to us, and sometimes it was.

I agree though, people don't seem to care as much now about the community, seeing it instead as an object to "vent on when (they) get stressed". Unfortunately the result is a loss of respect for the people we play with, and a degradation of the serious but fun and friendly atmosphere we used to enjoy in the old days.

Anyways, cool story and I look forward to reading more about Ravi and Mad Mandy. =)

Kato, that would be great. Please do use it as Fanfic.

Feel free to use the picture as well in the HoC archive.

Look forward to reading the completed archive.
