==Overview:==
The Thunderbolt "Zombie" is a Magistracy variant of the venerable
Thunderbolt meant to be ammo-independent during long deployments on the edges
of inhabited space. The short range missile launcher and machine guns were
deleted while the long range launcher was replaced with a large laser. The
medium laser battery was doubled and five additional heat sinks were added.
After some preliminary simulations, the design was modified to relocate
the large laser to the center torso and the right arm large laser was replaced
with a PPC at the expense of a couple of heat sinks. The 18 heat sinks allowed
a variety of firing patterns, but not alpha striking and movement could
gradually work up a performance-degrading heat burden.
The result was a battlemech that could shrug off enormous amounts of
damage, even going beyond armor loss to massive structural damage while still
being able to return fire.

After its 3035 introduction, the Thunderbolt "Zombie" was a target for
upgrades. It benefitted heavily from DHS, which freed 8 tons to handle
component armor, heavy duty components, and/or hardened armor. Endosteel was
another option that free several tons for reinforcement.
Of the 40 original "Zombies" built for the Magistracy between 3035 and
3040, 27 were rebuilt with DHS, endosteel, and 24 tons of hardened armor.
Though somewhat slower, the enormous durability of these machines was daunting
on the battlefield.

Different. So what lead you to going this route?

Several months ago, I read a thread about zombie mechs, the ones that just keep fighting until they're nothing but a stump of a center torso and head on the ground. At the time, I tried some mean n nasty variations of the Black Knight, but that grew to 100 tons in the revisions and I had Yet Another 100-Ton Mech(TM). So I gave up.

Then last night, the Thunderbolt just suddenly clicked with the zombie mech idea. I dusted off HMPro and churned out this mech, even managed to make L1.

Okay that is different. Interesting though. I do like the variant you posted.
