THK-4L Thorkelsson

Chassis: Wells 990 Power Plant: Nissan 300 XL Cruising Speed: 43 Maximum Speed: 64.5 Jump Jets: none Jump Capacity: none Armor: Durallex Heavy Special with CASE Armament: 2 SperryBrowning Machine Guns 4 Diverse Optics Type 2 Medium Lasers 3 Diverse Optics ER Small Lasers 2 Shigunga MRM 30s 1 Fusigon Longtooth ER PPC Manufacturer: Johnson 'Mechworks Inc. Primary Factory: Soul Communications System: Sony MST-15 Targeting and Tracking System: Wayne Marksman
Overview: When a representative of one of the Inner Sphere's largest mercenary groups came to JMInc. with a request for a new Command 'Mech, the design team was quick to respond, and teh THK-4L Thorkelsson was the impressive result. Designed for moderate mobility, decent survivability, and heavy firepower at close- or mid-range, the 'Mech's technical stats are impressive, but even more impressive is it's look -- looking almost like a bizarre mating of a Battlemaster and an Archer, the Thorkelsson radiates command and danger, making it a natural choice for a command role.
While expectations are high for this design, the contract has yet to be accepted, pending full testing.
Capabilities: Named after Ernst Thorkelsson, Assistant Lead Designer at Johnson 'Mechworks, Inc., the THK-4L is an awesome engine of destruction. Built around a pair of massive MRM racks, the 'Mech's close-range firepower is immense, and with two full tons of ammunition for each rack, the Thorkelsson can sustain that firepower for a significant period. Even with the missile racks spent or disabled, a cluster of lasers and miniguns provide respectable close-range punch. The THK-4L's weakness is a shortage of long-range damage, with a Fusigon Longtooth ERPPC providing only token firepower from a heavy 'Mech, but decent speed allows the 'Mech to close withing range of the monster MRMs fairly quickly. Critics of JMInc. in general and the Thorkelsson specifically point to two features: the vulnerability of an XL engine on a heavy 'Mech (especially one carrying this much ammo) and JMInc.'s notorious trademark "hot seat" machine gun ammo just below the cockpit. While the cockpit is equipped with specially shaped blast panels designed to deflect the main blast of an ammo explosion and propel the 'Mechwarrior safely away, the equipment was deemed too costly for a proper "live" test.
Known Variants: The only existing design variant fot the Thorkelsson is the original draft, dubbed the 2S, which downgrades the ERPPC to an ER Large Laser and drops some of the close-range weaponry in order to upgrade the MRMs to a pair of titanic 40-racks, each with 3 tons of ammunition. However, the design team made the rational choice to downgrade the missile systems to reach a better balance.

My Blurb: Ok, a bunch of oddities on this 'Mech. First, the XL on a heavy -- necessary to include a decent supporting long-range weapon. Second, CASE and Torso-mounted ammo with an IS XL Engine -- fluff reasons mostly, leaves more of the 'Mech to be salvaged in the event of an ammo crit. Third, MG ammo in the head -- IMHO, the safest place to put ammo. See fluff for reasons why it's "safe".
Anyway, comments?

I know some who should NOT use this mech, do to the ammo in the head...he has some really bad times with that. LOL!
I like the mech, nice fluff.

This thing definitely has its capabilites... I might take it out for a run against my custom 70 tonner.

Actually yes, go look up my Whammy varient, it's a bit out of the box and perhaps resembles the Robotech version of the Whammy.

Technical point here: since when did merc units have the funding to commission custom 'Mechs? And if you are building for a merc unit, which can be expected to operate anywhere in the Sphere or Periphery, why include such a specialized (pun) weapon as the MRM? Which garrison, or even House (other than the DC) stocks MRM ammo in sufficient quantities for the choice to be viable on any extended mission?

Think about the distribution of weapons because of the resserection (sp?) of the Star League, and especially of Operation Bull Dog, I think we'd find ammo in sufficient quanities, and oh yes, a Merc Unit who could commission a mech could be Grey Death Legion, Wolf's Dragoons, etc.

The GDL uses Lyran technology (as far as I know), and the Wolf's Dragoons have their hands on ClanTech. And besides those two, who would be able to afford custom 'Mechs?
And Bulldog was in the Smoke Jaguar occupation zone, which consisted mainly of Combine planets. Sure, they would get MRMs, but can you see anyone OUTSIDE the DC using MRMs?

Meh, you never know. But think of the MRM equipped units coming home. They're going to need ammo. And besides, MRM Ammo isn't that hard to make yeh know, its a tube, some rocket fuel, and a warhead.
Oh I know that was a gross oversimplification, but still, MRMs are pretty simple.

The only MRM-equipped units returing home would be Combine units. And they would be returning to the Draconis Combine... True, making MRMs is simple, but I doubt it to be something a merc quartermaster will be capable of doing in his/her spare time.

That's why you hire someone else to do it XP.
Besides, if you are a large merc unit, as the fluff indicates, I'm sure it would be easy to find someone to make MRMs for you.

I dunno, it still sounds kinda dodgy to me... Why not slap in a LRM rack? You would get much better range and accuracy out of it, and ammo (from the logistical viewpoint that I am trying to maintain) will be in abundance.

But for some the idea of MRMs has to much of a Robotech feel and style to it...

Giving this a second and third look, the Lyrans might be able to use this or the FRR.
