------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The Longsword is a highly accurate fast attack/fire support mech for heavy lances in Federated Suns regiments. A swift design, capable of laying down a withering barrage of fire it has been in development for nearly 30 years.
==Capabilities:== The Longsword has a long development history. Designed by the NAIS as one of the first new mechs to take advantage of the rediscovered Star League technology, the prototypes were ready just in time for the war of 3039. The original version of the Longsword was powered by a standard 300 VLAR engine with 19 single heat sinks and mounted an LRM 20, a large laser and four medium lasers.
The LRM-rack was designed to fire the then popular Listen-Kill missiles while the lasers were tied into a copy of the highly advanced Spar 3c Tight Band targeting computer featured on the Stalker. Unfortunately the computer suffered from fatal software glitches and the Listen-Kill missiles proved to be a short-lived technological breakthrough, thus dramatically reducing the capabilities of the Longsword.
Design work continued for a few years until budgets ran out and were not renewed.
Even the Clan invasion failed to rekindle interest in this design, until the introduction of the Targeting Computer in the later 3050's. The chassis was redesigned with a weight-saving Endo Steel skeleton and a more powerful 375 GM XL engine. A large and four medium pulse lasers tied into the new Davion targeting computer finally allowed designers to create a highly effective attack mech as originally planned.
==Battle History:== A small number of original Longswords were sent into combat during the War of 3039. They failed to make a suitable impression, more often being serviced than in the front lines.
Pilots reported at the time that the Longsword's targeting systems did not operate smoothly and often felt very counter-intuitive, more often misleading them than aiding them in combat.
The current version fought in the Fed Com civil war and proved to be an able fighting machine.
==Variants:== Although the Longsword has been approved by the procurement department, a modified version, the 4D, is being tested, dropping the XL engine for a standard 300 rated one. The resulting change does affect the speed, but allows the designers to add an extra heat sink and CASE for the LRM ammo, which makes the machine less vulnerable to penetrating hits. Another prototype replaces the LRM with a RAC/5.
It seems the definite version of the Longsword has not yet been decided upon.
==Deployment== The Longsword is mainly in service on the Capellan March, serving alongside machines like the Rakshasa and the War Dog.

This one is decent and could see use on Solairs.

Interesting...speed like that on a 75 makes for some frightening physical attack possibilities, especially with the firepower it can dish out up close. Although if hand-to-hand is not what you have in mind, you could save load up an additional 6.5 tons of gear by shrinking it to a 60-tonner...
Still, I like the fluff reasons...makes sense as an upgrade from a 4/6 75-tonner.
Peace is that glorious moment in history when everyone stands around reloading.

I did forget to mention that the Longsword's left hand is a good old-fashioned battlefist, as seen on the Zeus, Charger etc. There are some house rules that give the battlefist a point or two of extra damage when punching.

This would right at home on Solairs.
