------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== Named after the Soviet General who defended Stalingrad during WWII, the Chuikov is a dedicated urban fighter.
==Capabilities:== The Chuikov is a potent fighting machine, designed to operate in dense, built-up environments where it can ambush its prey.
Unlike most urban fighting mechs, the Chuikov comes in at 75 tons, severely outweighing designs such as the Vulcan and Urbanmech.
The broad-chested Chuikov mounts a deadly array of weapons concentrated around a fearsome LB-20X autocannon. The Stormgun-X is a unique weapon, using an over-and-under 140mm dual barrel system nicknamed the "Derringer". The unique configuration of this weapon has solved some of the loading problems of single-barreled weapons of large size. The Stormgun's 4-round burst can stagger even the heaviest opponents. Being an LBX autocannon it can select between solid shells or submunitions. Although theoretically it could mix loads for a single salvo, this practice is strongly discouraged by the manufacturer and the weapon will not fire and simply eject mixed loads. A few skilled techs have been able to modify the loading system with mixed results. In a few cases the loads caused jams, but some pilots report that the mixed firepower is something to behold. The lack of a hand and arm actuator might appear to be a weakness until the Chuikov flips its arm and delivers an unexpected lethal blow directly its rear.
Even without the LB-20X, the Chuikov still carries a fearsome arsenal, starting with the ER-PPC which is the Chuikov's only real long range weapon. Still deadly at close quarters it gives this mech a pair of fearsome main weapons.
Two medium pulse lasers provide accurate short range firepower, while a pair of machineguns and a flamer provide the anti-infantry capability.
A sophisticated Active Probe helps the Chuikov keep an eye on its surroundings and spot hidden units before they can spring their trap.
The final surprise comes in the form of triple-strength myomer, which allows the Chuikov to become a potent close combat machine, able to rip girders out of buildings and use them as makshift clubs. Only the Berserker is deadlier in HTH combat if the Chuikov is properly "warmed up".
The Chuikov has ample armour for its class, but is seriously handicapped in terms of mobility. Even with jump jets, the Chuikov is often little more than a target in open terrain. Mobile mechs with long range weaponry can snipe at the Chuikov as long as they can stay clear of the ER-PPC.
*TECHNICAL NOTE* Any Chuikov can be converted to fire mixed ammo loads. It requires a tech to make a 6+ roll with 2D6. Any time the mech fires a mixed load, there is a 4+ chance of a jam, with a cumulative +1 modifier for each mixed load after the first. The LB-20X fires 4 shells, each doing 5 points of damage and can be mixed so that it could do 15 points of damage as per standard ammo and 5 points of cluster damage or any other combination, note that all weapon loadouts must be the same for each ton of ammo. Mixing loads negates the to hit bonus of the cluster ammo and the chances of hitting other targets.
==Battle History:== The Chuikov was first introduced in 3061, in time to participate in the FedCom Civil war and the Blakist Jihad.
Although highly specialised, the Chuikov performed superbly and became a much feared opponent in the urban environment.
Stories of light mechs caught by the "Derringer" while trying to attack the Chuikov in the back are legion and often end with vivid descriptions of a pair of smoking legs or the mech being completely eviscerated in a cartoon-like fashion.
==Variants:== One minor variant designed to operate in a lance environment replaces the probe with an ECM system, offering the unit some extra protection from more advanced weapon systems.
Several variants appeared after the start of the Jihad. The 5C model replaces the LB-X autocannon with a deadly Ultra version, replacing the pulse lasers for standard medium models and adding two tons of extra ammo.
The 6C Mounts the deadly Heavy Gauss Rifle, forcing the mech to drop the flamer and downgrade the lasers to standard medium. This version is sometimes nicknamed the Zaitsev. This version mounts the HGR in the torso and moves the center torso laser and MG to the arm, giving this variant a pair of fully functioning arms. Unfortunately this version does suffer from jamming problems as the machine had to be extensively rebuilt to accomodate the mammoth weapon, therefore making this one the rarest version only in service with Steiner units.
And finally the 5P drops the ER PPC and replaces it with a Large Pulse laser, this version is rare since it leaves the Chuikov vulnerable to attack.
==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:== Adept Ekaterina "Katja" Timofeevich Fedorov salvaged a Chuikov after it mauled her Mad Cat II. A member of the Word of Blake Militia, she discovered a previously hidden talent for urban warfare. Her mech, nicknamed "Grozny", meaning fearsome or awe-inspiring in Russian, participated in several major urban conflicts, leaving a long trail of destruction it its wake. One day she happened upon the site of a WOB massacre. Though she refused to admit to herself this was the work of her own people, she lost her heart and became sloppy, losing the will to fight. She held on as the WOB was pushed into retreat. Ironically, she was finally killed in combat in the closing months of the conflict holed up in the ruins of Volgograd on Terra devasted since the fall of the Star League, long out of ammo, with few functioning weapons and her active probe destroyed, she was ambushed by a lance of Urbanmechs. Caught in a crossfire her mech was reduced to scrap, dying in the cockpit, her ejection mechanism either defective or simply switched off.
==Deployment== The specialisation of the Chuikov somewhat limited its use. Many were concentrated in special lances or companies dedicated to urban assault.
A few also became popular on Solaris and were modified for the games.

Exclleent fluff and the mech is a decent one for city fighting.
