==Overview:==
Though it captured the imagination for centuries, the Vanguard is all but
forgotten these days, only known to Mech affecionados and historians. Unique
for being a status symbol for the elite of the Terran Hegemony.

==Capabilities:==
The history of the Vanguard dates back to the earliest generations of mechs.
First produced in 2471 as a battlefield superiority assault mech. Despite the
advanced design, the Vanguard failed to be comissioned with the SLDF until
2502 and then only on a limited basis.

The Vanguard's design was unique for its day, pioneering the bird-leg stance
found in later designs such as the Locust, Catapult and Marauder, it was an
extremely stable weapon platform, mounting a pair of AC/10 in its
aircraft-fuselage-style torso. A medium laser mounted in each arm provided
the short range firepower.

Because Vanquish Enterprises could not mass-produce the Vanguard due to its
advanced design. Many parts were produced to excruciatingly high standards in
a sophisticated zero-g factory, a first in battlemech design.

As a result the Vanguard was considered far superior in terms of build quality
to any other mech then in service. The unusually roomy cockpit featured an
advanced pilot's couch and even a small shower unit, something unseen in other
mechs to this day. The highly advanced sensor and communications suite made
it the ideal command mech, combined with one of the finest targeting systems
ever installed in a battlemech short of a Clan targeting computer.

The Vanguard was considered very accurate and could place its shots with great
confidence even at longer ranges.

Almost all parts, including the fusion reactor and weapons were custom built
by Vanquish. Though superior designs, they were completely incompatible with
other existing systems, making repairs without original parts a true
nightmare. Fortunately each Vanguard was lavishly provided with spare parts,
but as soon as production ended, the Vanguard's extinction became a matter of
time.

Even though it was cutting-edge for the 2470's, it was very quickly overtaken
by other Mechs such as the Archer and Thunderbolt. It took nearly a century
for the Vanguard to catch up and soon the Vanguard was updated every decade or
so with new technology. Endo steel and an XL engine made more room for better
armour and the AC/'s were swapped for LB-X weapons. The medium lasers were
doubled, then replaced with large lasers.

Though it only sold a handful of Vanguards to the SLDF, Vanquish had cornered
the market for the nobles and elite of the Hegemony. A Vanguard became a
standard of exclusivity and the last models produced before the fall of the
Star League still remain unsurpassed today.



==Battle History:==
Even though the Vanguard was designed for combat, it rarely did so. It became
the equivalent of medieval parade armour, stunning to look at, but never used
in real combat.

The models delivered to the SLDF did see combat and proved to be quite
effective, even though its weapon configurations lacked flexibility.

After the founding of the Star League, Vanquish was allowed to sell mechs to
the nobles of the various Inner Sphere powers, though there were limits to the
technology they were allowed to sell to those customers. A new factory was
built on Dieron to allow for the sudden increase in production. The factory
survived the Civil War, but as the Draconis Combine was about to take over the
planet, Vanquish decided to resettle to another Hegemony world. Sadly the
transport dropship suffered a catastrophic malfunction and most of the
personnel of the factory were killed. Vanquish closed shop a few years later
as the 1st succession war broke out.

==Variants:==
By the mid 2600's almost no Vanguard was alike, built to the specifications of
the customer they could mount anything from lasers to Gauss Rifles though the
main configuration of twin-main guns and secondary armament in the arms
remained unchanged.

Some Vanguards were sold for prices in excess of 100 million of today's
C-Bills.



==Deployment==
In total little over 250 Vanguards were made from 2471 until 2769. None
survive today. A few parts are on display in museums across the Inner Sphere
and Clan worlds or in the hands of private collectors.

Very well done on the fluff. That reads a lot better then some of the canon stuff.

The mech is undergunned but that isn't a real problem given the you can use the range of the AC10s to keep the enemy away. Nice job.

And your many variants seems to try and answer the issue. Nice job again on this one.

Like the Base Variant indeed... Hard-Hitting, well protected, Front-On Firepower... I guess Military Planners of the Day (as well as Nowadays, it seems) seems to think "Rugged and Dependable" as "Old and Obselete" -

I'd take a few - a design well worth bringing back... Personal Preference would be a 2B Variant - although I'd drop the Small Lasers for CASE in Each Torso... Don't need anything more than that, I don't believe.... Big, Stompy, and (Relatively) Low Tech and easy to Maintain...

Perhaps Heretic BattleMechs should look at the Heavier Designs - I don't think I've done one over 55 Tons, and that was the Erishkegal Freak of a 'Mech...

I'd have to say thats a pretty cool concept for a mech design. Like a rare, antique car owned by some rich aficinado. I'd like to see a modern equalivent if such an animal is possible anymore. I'd bring it back, in style of course.
