------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== Named after Odin's legendary sword in the Niebelungenlied, used by Siegfried to kill the dragon Fafnir, the Balmung is an attempt to marry the fearsome Heavy Gauss Rifle to a Medium mech chassis.
==Capabilities:== Clearly patterned on designs such as the Hollander and Hunchback, the Balmong had to adress those mech's weaknesses and problems.
Mechs such as the Hunchback were a partial failure. Though it carried one of the deadliest weapons on the battlefield it was too slow to catch most lighter mechs. It also lacked the armour to successfully close in with heavier machines.
Designed primarily to hunt Assault Mechs, the Balmung had to be fast and maneuverable. The light engine solved this problem without taking up too much internal space in the torso, still it did require designers to mount the secondary capacitator into the center torso. Jump Jets further enhanced the Balmung's mobility.
Faster than most assault mechs, the Balmung can choose its engagement range to make full use of the HGR's firepower.
Though the armour hasn't been improved over the Hunchback or Hollander, its mobility and range should help overcome this problem. The lack of secondary weapons is a more important problem. Carrying only 12 shots it cannot stray far from its supply lines.
==Battle History:== The Balmung is a brand-new design and is still mostly untested. Initial reports are quite promising though.
==Variants:== A proposed variant will switch the HGR for a regular Gauss Rifle, a medium pulse laser and an extra ton of armour.
==Deployment== The Balmung were originally intended for deployment on the Clan border, but as the Jihad grips the Inner Sphere more units are deployed to protect key worlds in the path of the WOB bulldozer.

Nice way to address the issues.
