------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== Originally conceived as an assault-class fire support mech, the Arminius was designed shortly before the WOB assaulted Tharkad. Supply problems forced engineers to completely redesign the mech into a heavy strike mech.
==Capabilities:== lBeam Laser Technologies (lBLM) was famous during the Star League years for producing the Half-Rifle, a carbine-like laser weapon. By the time of the succession wars it became a subcontractor, producing lasers for other companies. Once the old Star League technology was rediscovered, lBLM soon began expanding and by 3060 the company felt ready to move into Battlemech production.
The original design of the Trident was a "Slow, ugly, bloated oversized version of the Catapult" At first, the three large pulse lasers jutted out of the torso, hence the name Trident. An 80-ton mech, it had a top speed of 54kph and mounted two LRM15 racks.
The final prototype was ready about three months before the WOB bombardment of Tharkad. Unfortunately it didn't meet requirements and the original design team went back to the drawing board.
As the news of the bombardment and the destruction of other factories reached them, efforts were redoubled to produce a new workable design.
The factory's security chief, a Clan-War veteran and a skilled engineer, Ferenc Török joined the team. Unable to secure certain parts, he went on a mission to locate suitable parts. One of the major problems was the lack of engines. They did find a stock of 300 XL engines, which prompted Török and his team to completely redesign the Trident into an almost completely new machine.
The Arminius became a test-bed for one of Török's pet projects, stealth systems. Unable to duplicate the system the Capellans had perfected, they implemented a series of passive modifications, turning the bloated guppy-shaped Trident into a sleek, angular mech. The jutting lasers were moved back into the mechs body, behind a protective baffle which would prevent damage should the mech fall over. Both arms could be pulled back into recessed areas, creating a flush surface, further reducing the signature.
The modifications, though fairly low-tech, resulted in a 30% reduction of the mech's silhouette compared to the mech of the same volume and surface.
The larger engine and size reduction forced a number of changes. Both LRM's were downgraded to LRM10's, giving the Arminius some fire support ability.
==Battle History:== Trading mechs for engines and parts at other factories, the lBLM team produced nearly 80 units before WOB forces raided the planet. Török's foresight had moved some of the main production facilities into remote regions, retaining dummy factories which were leveled by the WOB, but at a very high cost. Believing the factories were destroyed they left the real plant untouched.
In combat the Arminius proved fairly effective. Capable of hiding very close to the enemy without being spotted, it became a dangerous ambusher. Opening up with volleys of LRM fire before closing in with its highly accurate laser barrage. A complete battalion protected a factory and suffered only 7 losses against 17 WOB mechs. The mission commander considered using WMD's on the surviving defenders, but feeling his job was done, he withdrew his forces.
==Variants:== The 45L model replaces one of the pulse lasers with an ER model, giving the mech extra range should it run out of LRM ammo. The 46L version drops one of the Large pulse lasers and upgrades to LRM 15 racks.
==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:== Brevet Major Ferenc Török a veteran of the Clan invasion. He led several successful guerilla campaigns, where he learned the value of camouflage and the use of modifications to reduce the signature of a battlemech, allowing his forces to negate the Clan range advantage.
He resigned his commission in 3074 as Chief Designer and Security CIC, to join Devlin Stone's operations against the WOB, he was killed in 3076 on board a jump ship attacked by a nuclear weapon.
==Deployment== Production picked up by 3075. Several hundred mechs were produced and remained in service with LAAF until the Age of Peace, where many were scrapped. By 3120 only a handful of Arminius were still in service, but production was restarted by 3125.

Like the fluff...the IS pulse weapons...well they are great for city fighting...beyond that not much else.
