------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== Commanders in the field will often pilot heavy and assault class mechs, relying mainly on armour and firepower to keep them safe on the battlefield.
Named after the famous German general from the 20th century, the Manstein is equipped with a command console to allow a commander or tactical officer to oversee a battle personally.
==Capabilities:== The Manstein follows a different design philosophy than most other command mechs. Designed for bursts of speed up to almost 130kph using MASC , the Manstein can outrun most heavy mechs and many lights and mediums. A 300-meter jump range helps to make the Manstein one of the most mobile mechs in its weight class.
Should the Manstein come to the attention of enemy forces or headhunter teams, it carries as much armour as its frame could bear with an ECM forming a secondary defense against more advanced weaponry.
But the mobility and armour come at a price. The Manstein is underarmed for a machine of this size. Mounting a single ER Large laser and a pair of ER Medium Lasers. Enough to hold off enemy mechs, unless they press their attack in which case the Manstein can easily break off and move into cover.
Of course its main strength is its command console, which allows a commander to concentrate on tactics and directing operations. The Mech's speed allows it to quickly move alongside the front lines and participate where needed.
==Battle History:== Mansteins tend to stay out of fights unless given no other choice. Most usually have an escort of fast light and medium mechs that act as a screening force.
This does not mean the Manstein is harmless. using the jump and shoot method, Mansteins have been able to bring down several attackers or forced them to back off.
Perhaps the most famous batttle involved a Manstein and an Awesome. The pilot stayed at the very edge of its range, keeping out of range of the Awesome's standard PPC's most of the time. Jumping from cover to cover, it was able to seriously damage the Awesome, routing it off the field.
==Variants:== A number of Mansteins make use of Clan weapons mounting Clan ER Large Lasers or Large Pulse Lasers. Expensive and rare they are reserved for important military personel.
Other versions do away with the large laser altogether, replacing them with a number of medium lasers and an Anti-Missile system for added protection. These variants stay out of combat at any cost.
Rumours of a Manstein captured by the Capellan Confederation and equipped with stealth armour have yet to be confirmed.
==Deployment== One of the last mechs developed by the Federated Commonwealth it is still built in the LA and FS, though the Lyran factory was sabotaged by Davion loyalists. It is believed this has given the Federated Suns a definite advantage in several engagements.
A few have been sold to Mercenary units, notably Wolf's Dragoons and the Kell Hounds.
