------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The history of the Dominator is a tale of greed, deceit, corruption, murder and gross incompetence.
==Capabilities:== A group of companies unoficially known as the Conglomerate had made great profits manufacturing parts for the SLDF decided in 2727 to produce a new battlemech, so they could make handsome profits from the sale of spare parts. Using copious amounts of bribery and judiciously placed threats and blackmail the Conglomerate helped set up a mech procurement program.
The new design had to be an assault class machine, able to move at least 60kph, mount at least three of the lastest long range heavy weapons and should be able to survive an AC/20 hit to the chest, but it had to cost less than 12 million c-bills.
When manufacturers saw the requirements most didn't even try, the few that did could not meet all requirements save one, the Dominator, put forward by the Conglomerate.
All this might not have been damning, if the Conglomerate had indeed been able to produce a viable design. Instead the design was a true comittee design, built on parts the conglomerate could produce without acquiring licenses.
Parts such as the 400-rated engine and ER PPC's were chosen because they were quite rarely used in those days. Mounting three of them on the chassis, though it only had 10 heat sinks. The huge engine taking up so much space, designers had to squeeze out a little extra armour using Ferro-Fibrous, which again could be sold at a healthy mark-up.
If indeed the Dominator was cheap to buy, it cost the SLDF a fortune to run. Spare parts, almost all of which were proprietory designs, meant that a single Dominator was eight times more expensive to run than say a Dervish.
Dozens of SLDF officials were bribed and the design's failures were covered up as an order for nearly 2500 units was brokered.
A few whistle-blowers were callously pursued, publically ridiculed, their lives and careers ruined. A few people were even murdered.
Just as the first models reached front-line units in 2732, a certain Lieutenant General Kerensky noted the new design. Attempts to bribe and intimidate him did not work and he vigourously built a solid case against the design. It is believed an attempt on his life was considered at the time.
==Battle History:== "Good morning general would you like a drink ?" "No thank you mr *******, I would like to get down to business right away." "Oh, what is it that you require from me ?" "I would like to talk to you about the Dominator." "Yes, our newest design, we are quite proud of it." "I don't see anything about it to be proud." "Really ? I understand it passed all the quartermaster tests with flying colours, the only mech to do so." "Those tests were rigged, the design is worthless." "I'm not sure I like the tone of your voice, general, we pride ourselves into making the finest weapons modern technology can provide." "I'm building a case against the Conglomerate and ..." "General, we have many fiends, friends in high places who do not take lightly to baseless accusations." "Are you threatening me ?" "Dear me, general, I would never do such a thing, I am a respectable businessman, but I understand that you pilot an Orion is that correct ?" "Yes, why is it your concern ?" "It's a fairly old design, and older mechs are often prone to accidents, if you understand my meaning ?" "I understand that you are not willing to listen to reason, and I'm afraid you might have to face the consequences down the road and don't think your threats will stop me." "General, if you believe you are dealing with the same Periphery Neanderthals, you are sorely mistaken. I only need to snap my fingers and your career grinds to a halt and you'll be guarding the Star League on a radiation blasted asteroid so deep in the periphery it will take an HPG message a year to reach it." "Maybe I'll end up somewhere deep in the periphery, but not before I have wiped that superior smirk from your face and brought down your corrupt little scheme, mark my words." [laughter]
==Deployment== First deployed in 2732, the many flaws of this design could not be hidden. The Dominator was not a sound design to start with, but building quality was even worse. Pilots complained their machines were never operational and techs went through a steady supply of spare parts.
The conglomerate attempted to cover up its failure but within months the design's total failure was clear to all but the most corrupt bribe-takers.
In less than a year the Dominator was out of active duty. The Conglomerate tried to sue the SLDF for breach of contract, but Kerensky soon brought down a mountain of evidence that no money could silence. The Conglomerate was broken up.
During the Amaris Civil War, what was left of the Conglomerate tried to sell the Dominator to the Rim Worlds Republic, its leaders and managers were sumarily executed on orders of Amaris himself.

Loved the background behind this one. 11 mil for the mech is cheap when you look at the firepower but then the lack of heat sinks don't do much for it getting to use the weapons...even doubles won't help...and then there is the armor...hell my Harpy Scout vehicle has more...

Yeah, the only thing that can save a 4/6 100-tonner is an XL engine, and that does...amusing...things to the cost...

That sounds like the type of business that got the Stryker in production in today's army. Thats truley one hidiously bad design you made, I like it. Its funny because its true.
