------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== For centuries the Black Manta's true history was largely unknown until a few years ago.
Originally part of the SLDF's black ops department, this mech, also known as the Vampire and the Aurora was the subject of much speculation and disinformation intentionally spread to keep this design under wraps.
==Capabilities:== It was at one time believed that the Black Manta used a variant of the Kearny-Fuchida drive to "teleport" itself next to enemy command mechs and destroy them. Some said the Manta could become totally invisible, others believed it could fly or even transform into a boulder or a structure.
It isn't until one was recovered from a space wrecked dropship that the true history of the Manta could finally be pieced together.
The mech's unusual flattened, somewhat winged shape was part of a program to produce a superior version of the Exterminator, taking lessons learned from another stealth mech, the Spector.
This unusual shape dramatically reduced the mechs's visible signature, combined with the already proven null-signature system, chameleon shield and an ECM, the Manta could approach much closer to enemy forces before being detected than the Exterminator.
Heavier by ten tons it was slower, but carried better armour and weapons since enemy forces were often aware of the threat of an Exterminator attack. As a result the Black Manta could engage assault class mechs with a higher chance of success.
The armament was installed inside the Mech's body, further reducing the signature and protecting the weapons against adverse conditions. The panels were designed in such a way that they would automatically open in case of malfunction.
Operating alongside Exterminators and Spectors, the Black Manta was vital in taking out enemy assets in the later years of the Star League.
==Battle History:== Dozens of crackpot theories were deliberatly spread to further confuse the SLDF's enemies. False design specs were leaked, faked holovids and false witnesses created a total state of confusion.
In later years, with much of this information finally declassified, historians began to piece together the true history of the Black Manta, but all attempts were failures until the discovery of the Star League core and the opening of the Comstar archives.
Though very little information was available, it allowed historians to narrow down the possiblities and the subsequent discovery of a surviving Black Manta finally laid most myths to rest.
Unfortunately the mech was destroyed less than a year after its discovery. During the Blakist Jihad, several reports were made of units closely resembling the Black Manta striking important targets.
==Variants:== No known variant has been reported so far.
==Deployment== Though Comstar fielded no Black Manta's, the World of Blake is believed to possess a company or more of these machines. Their source and origins are unknown, since none was reported destroyed and none were recovered during or after the Jihad.
Several Black Mantas were discovered in the stocks of Clan Smoke Jaguar and were taken by the forces participating in operation Bulldog. This discovery showed that the Clans still partake in black ops when the situation warrants it, despite all claims to the countrary.

Interesting...I see this one as more of an RPG unit then a mech for the skirmish games.

The way I remember it, the null-sig system generates quite a lot of heat once activate, quiaff? Would the reliance on energy weapons not fudge up the heat curve once the null-sig system is activated for the turn?
