==Overview:==
The Clans' industrial base was still shaky at the start of the Golden Century.
Battlemech production was low and restricted to lighter designs. Assault
mechs were rare and most Clans stockpiled theirs into reserve units.

When Clan Smoke Jaguar introduced the Stone Rhino it caused a shock among
their rivals. Extremely powerful it brushed aside older Atlases and
Highlanders with ease.

Clan Wolf scientists rushed to come up with the answer and produced the War
Elephant.

==Capabilities:==
A battleship on legs, or a wall with guns is some of the imagery used to
describe the War Elephant. Until then mechs either had a humanoid shape or a
bird-legged pod appearance. There was something unsettling about this
brutalist design that unnerved many.

In order to simplify production, Clan Wolf engineers created a box-like
chassis, placing the weapons on functional mounts with little care for
aesthetics, though some claim it was deliberate.

The War Elephant mounted a deadly array of weapons, surpassing the Stone
Rhino's arsenal with ease. A triple gauss rifle array, backed up with an ER
Large Laser and a Large Pulse laser. An LRM10 and a pair of Machineguns
completed the mech's weaponry.

Though it lacked hands to fight with, it carried enough ranged weaponry to
blast enemy mechs to pieces long before they could get in range.

Unfortunately the War Elephant suffered from a number of flaws. The mech's
sheer bulk made it difficult to fit in most repair bays or dropships. Some of
the leg armour plates could shift when struck with suffiicient force, brushing
against the actuators and myomers, causing much wear and tear on these already
strained components.

The interior of the War Elephant had room to spare, but the jumble of wires,
bulkheads and ammunition feeds were a tech's nightmare.

Pilots complained that the mech's ride was rough and that even minor shocks
seemed to shoot up through the mech and straight into the pilot's seat.

Yet despite its rough finish, the War Elephant was successul. It gave Clan
Wolf's front line forces a very potent assault mech with a fearsome appearance
and reputation.

Its legacy can be seen with many Clan mechs, with their utilitarian appearance
bordering on the alien, that unnerved so many Inner Sphere pilots when they
first confronted the Clans.

==Battle History:==
For several months Clan Smoke Jaguar's Stone Rhino's seemed to dominate the
battlefield, during an engagement with Clan Wolf, the Jaguars dropped a star
of mechs in the middle of their staging area. This daring raid, landing a
dropship in the middle of enemy forces required nerves of steel for the pilot,
but the results were worth it.

Three Stone Rhinos, supported by a pair of Thugs savaged Clan Wolf forces as
they struggled to organise themselves.

It was the quick reaction of Star Colonel Tanja Ward that saved Clan Wolf's
forces that day. She threw her Black Knight into the fight, buying her men
enough time to mount a pair of War Elephants. She described her fight with a
Stone Rhino as terrifying. She could see the Stone Rhino's pilot, grinning as
he almost took her mech apart with a few shots. Until the War Elephants
arrived. The Smoke Jaguar pilot sat stunned in his cockpit, staring with open
mouth as the War Elephant loomed over his machine.

Minutes later, the first Stone Rhino fell. Tanja Ward turned what had begun
as a rout into a successful assault. Though her mech was destroyed, she
hitched a ride on a tank and using a portable commset, guided the Wolf forces
to victory.

==Variants:==
The War Elephant was ironically superceded by newer, better designs and
production ceased after less than a hundred were made. Most were lost in
combat over the years. The few that were kept in reserve and garrison units
were lost when the clan split apart.

None remain today.

==Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:==
Star Colonel Tanja Ward

Having lost her Black Knight, Tanja Ward chose a War Elephant as her
replacement mech in the final stages of her engagements with the Smoke
Jaguars, bringing down eighteen enemy mechs single-handedly. Sadly she was
killed in a automobile accident a few months later.

Fun mech. It gets the ol' imagination flowing. Can't help but envision it as a quad. So, 20 tons of armor and a reverse engineer of the Rhino later...
