A few years ago, people used to have design tournaments here. Someone would set rules and people would submit designs. When a certain number of slots were filled, the host would pit the designs against one another in one on one matches, giving detailed reports of the fights and results.

I was thinking that I might rekindle that tradition using MegaMek. Would anyone be willing to help me think up requirements and rules for a new tournament? Let me know.

I am not sure how people did them in the past, but I thought that I would handle both 'mechs in each fight.

Sounds like fun. How about running some of the fights from the novels, where by some streak of divine (read: author fiat) luck, an Elemental takes out an Atlas? That could be interesting, if only to show how improbable some of those scenarios were *shrugs*

You mean like this:

65 ton mech

Has to move at least 4/6.

Has to have one ammo feed weapon, MGs do not count as being the one.

The main user of this will be the Combine and it will be seeing action of their shared borders with the Bears and the Suns. The rest is up to you folks.

Ok, I couldn't remember if it was you or not. Is Cray still around here?

Anyway, could you give me a breakdown on how you used to do this stuff? What kinds of terrain would you have the 'mech's fight in? Those kinds of things. I really appreciate it.

Cross between a Catapult and a JagerMech. Has jumpjets to make up for the low top speed, along with a trio of medium lasers and a MRM 10-pack to dissuade any melee attackers. The LB-X cannons can either plink or be used for flak.

An alternate version could drop the MRM and uprate the LB-X cannons to UAC, with the remaining tonnage used for a SRM2 and ammo.

Cray is around from time to time...and yes it was pretty much me and a few others posting the contests or hey here is this weight class build something that can do A, B, C, etc...

What I would do is this, pick a weight, give some basic requirements and maybe give a price limit, you know to keep believable. Then sit back and watch the folks around here have fun with the contest.

As for terrain and using the stuff, some times I do get the chance to use the stuff, some times not. Terrain will vary, we draw four or more maps and what we get is what we fight over.

I have decided that I will be accepting ten designs for this tournament. Here are the requirements:

Inner Sphere chassis and weapons, tech level 2. Please do not use anything better than the 3055 TRO. Double Heat Sinks, XL engines, Ferro-Fiberous armor, Endosteel, and MASC are all welcome. No omnimechs please.

Think of the Griffin, the Shadow Hawk, and the Wolverine. The medium-class workhorses of the entire Inner Sphere. Your goal is to follow in their illustrious footsteps. You must design a medium 'mech that can stand up to the rigors of frontline combat. They have to move at least 4/6 and have a mix of short and long range weaponry. They also need to have at least one ammo-fed weapon (missile or ballistic) and at least one energy weapon. They must also carry at least nine tons of armor (standard) or eight tons (ferro-fiberous). Any questions, please post them here. You can be as detailed and fluffy as you want.

All of the battles will be fought on the "Battletech" map that comes as part of Megamek. It is 16x17 hexes big, has scattered woods and a thin river that starts at the southern edge and moves up the map, ending about 2/3s of the way up. It also has two small hills in the upper and lower right hand corners. The 'mechs will start facing each other with one 'mech within three hexes of the north edge and the other within three hexes of the south edge.

Well, The Draconis Combine had Omni Tech as far bask as '52, and C3 Systems at '50... No-One else did however. Triple Strength Myomer was in the CC (fixed version, of course) at 3050, and in the Federated Commonwealth in 55...

Everyone has Artemis, Endo Steel, Narcs, Streak SRM-2s, XL Engines, LB10-X ACs, Ultra AC/5s, MASC, CASE, All 3 Flavours of Pulse Laser, ER Larges, ER PPCs, Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous Armour, AMS, Gauss Rifles, Beagle Probes and Guardian ECM.

Oh, and ifyou're lucky to be in Comstar, you got A-Pods in '55 as well...

Thats pulled from a few Canon sources of BT (Mainly the Mercs Supplement II), so feel free to limit it one way or another... Its your Competition after all

But, here's my First Entry:

BattleMech Technical Readout

Type/Model: Alrune ALR-01X
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3055
Config: Biped BattleMech
Rules: Level 2, Custom design

Mass: 45 tons
Chassis: Endo Steel

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Named after formed Demonesses and Sorceresses who were the acclaimed Mothers
of the Huns in ancient Germany, the Alrune is a BattleMech gifted with
impressive amounts of accurate firepower.

In being given the task of designing a 'Mech with above average technology,
but utilising only items to be found in the Lyran Alliance in 3055, Heretic
BattleMechs have created a monster.

Two massive Defiance B3L Large Lasers dominate the arms, which end in simple
battle fists. The secondary armament is what makes the Alrune quite
devestating.

A Tri-set of Randall "Hellbitch" Medium Lasers in the left breast is offset by
a pair of Short Range 2 Racks, enhanced with the "Streak" system. Although
wide in this day and age, the Streak-2s were high-tech in 3055, and thus
incorporated within the design.

Although fairly heat efficient, full jump and firing all of the energy
weaponry quickly pushes the Alrune to a hefty heat level - at which point, the
Triple Strength Myomer kicks in. Empowered by both its jump jets and its
enhanced musculature, the Alrune is capable of raining Atlas-like Damage on a
foe, who would not expect it from such a Small machine.

Its single biggest downfall (and by no means its only) is the fact that its
Armour is slabbed far too far to the front - offering only minimal protection
should an enemy get behind it - but maximum protection during a front-up
slugfest.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
SHARD, short for Standard Hit-And-Run Destroyer, was developed by Token
Industries at the request of a private collector. As the owner of his own
world, he wished for a relatively modern mech capable of fending off the odd
pirate attack. Although there were any number of mechs already in circulation
that would have fulfilled this role, he wanted something unique his own. If
you had the money and connections to afford your own world, wouldn't you want
your defense force to be equally unique?

==Capabilities:==
A jack-of-all trades mech, the SHARD is built for any and all engagement
roles. Its large Magna 275 Engine combined with Twitter-style jumpjets has
made the machine incredibly fast and agile for its weight.

Its weapons load-out isn't shabby either. Primary fire power comes in the
form of a Thunderhead 15-tube missle rack combined with a Deadeye 45mm
Autocannon. Complimenting these are a brace of Starlighter Medium and
Medium-Pulse lasers. Rounding out the machine is a single 4-tube SRM missile
launcher.

Trials have proven the machine to be extremely capable, however, the
relatively thin armor (9 tons) has made the machine somewhat frail. Regardless,
the machine's excellent mobility tends to mitigate this issue.

==Deployment==
Unknown - A shipment of two of these machines were sent to the Periphery.
However, the machines were intercepted en-route by an unknown third party.
Neither machine has reappeared since.

ER Mediums came after 3057 for the Inner Sphere. The original TRO 3055 has no IS mechs with ER Mediums.

To clear it up, for the Inner Sphere ER Mediums were not around in 3055 for anyone to use.

As I tried to state earlier - Only the LBX/10, and the UAC/5 were around on or before '55 - same as Streak 2 Racks, and ER-Larges... The other varieties were just not founded... However, there ARE all Flavours of Pulse Lasers... Of course, the TRO could be more correct than the FM:Mercs II table - as the Mercs table shows what was "Commonly Available" in each House - but of course, there would always be Test-Beds...

Its not my competition, so I'm not commenting on Legality - but I like to think I can find Fluff when its needed!

Be careful with the original TRO 3055 and the Upgrade version it can be confusing...

Yes everything most of the stuff you listed were around during that time as were some of the other weapons began to make their showing, best bet would be to check the Tech Manual for the now canon dates as to when something was available, but based off the TROs some weapons were not around and thus not aviable on the front line units.

Fairly substantial revision of the mech. The LB-5x was upgraded to a LB-10x, the LRM-15 replaced with a ER large laser, and the SRM-4 was dropped entirely. Lastly, one more Med-Pulse laser was added. I figure the 20 rounds of ammo should be sufficient for the LB-X, and even if it runs dry, the machine still has a Large laser and plenty of medium-range lasers for extended missions.

world, he wished for a relatively modern mech capable of fending off the odd
pirate attack. Although there were any number of mechs already in circulation
that would have fulfilled this role, he wanted something unique his own. If
you had the money and connections to afford your own world, wouldn't you want
your defense force to be equally unique?

==Capabilities:==
A jack-of-all trades mech, the SHARD is built for any and all engagement
roles. Its large Magna 275 Engine combined with Twitter-style jumpjets has
made the machine fairly fast and agile for its weight.

Its weapons load-out isn't shabby either. Primary fire power comes in the
form of a Martell Large Laser matched with a Lubalin 85mm Autocannon. The
autocannon itself is fed from two distinct bins, granting the pilot the
ability to change from standard to cluster rounds, mid-mission. Jammming of
the ammunition feed was a major problem in the first prototype, but the issue
has since been corrected. Complimenting the primary weapons are a brace of
Magna Medium Lasers and a trio of Martell Medium-Pulse lasers.

Trials have proven the machine to be extremely capable. However, the
relatively thin armor (9 tons) has made the machine somewhat frail.
Regardless, the machine's mobility and more than respectable firepower is felt
to mitigate this issue.

==Deployment==
Unknown - A shipment of two of these machines were sent to the Periphery.
However, the machines were intercepted en-route by an unknown third party.
Neither machine has reappeared since.
