Tech Manual question...
      #152179 - 10/28/08 01:50 PM (66.227.223.24)

Can anyone tell me how to make sense of the Tech Rating column in the back of the book for the Battlemech weapons?

Tech Ratings are REAL tech ratings based off of the Classic BattleTech RPG 3rd Edition Ratings

A: Primitive Technology requiring no industry

B: Technology and Industry level common in the period ranging from the 19th to 20th century

C: Technology and Industry level common in the Period Ranging from the 21st to 22nd Centuries (2008 is after the year 2000, so this is now tech level C)

D: Technology and Industry level common in the period ranging from the 23rd to 25th Century and technology and Industry Level that the Innersphere & Periphery fell back to in the period from the 28th to 31st Centuries: this is the Tech Level associated with the Old Level 1 Rules

E: Technology and Industry Level common in the period ranging from the 26th to 28th Centuries... This is the Technology Level Associated with the Innersphere Portion of the Old Level 2 Rules.

F: Clans Technology and Industry Level.

There is also the Avalilability Rating that ranges from A to X and is an indication of how common an item or technology is.

The actual descriptions are given on pg121 of Tech Manual. Chris has some biases about lower tech levels and is letting the biases show through rather than referencing the latest books.

Quote:

A: Primitive Technology requiring no industry

Actually, Tech Rating A corresponds to 19th and 20th Centuries. See pg121 Tech Manual.

Quote:

B: Technology and Industry level common in the period ranging from the 19th to 20th century

Per pg121 Tech Manual, Tech B actually corresponds to the late 20th Century. The Abrams tank (even the M1A2) is a typical Tech B product.

Quote:

C: Technology and Industry level common in the Period Ranging from the 21st to 22nd Centuries (2008 is after the year 2000, so this is now tech level C)

Tech C does, in fact, correspond to 21st and 22nd century technologies. However, the dividing lines are nebulous. For example, the Tech D KF drives are early 22nd century developments, while many "modern" armored vehicles remain Tech B into the early 21st Century.

Quote:

D: Technology and Industry level common in the period ranging from the 23rd to 25th Century and technology and Industry Level that the Innersphere & Periphery fell back to in the period from the 28th to 31st Centuries: this is the Tech Level associated with the Old Level 1 Rules

That's one way to put it. pg121 of Tech Manual defines it as "Age of War and Succession Wars."

Quote:

E: Technology and Industry Level common in the period ranging from the 26th to 28th Centuries... This is the Technology Level Associated with the Innersphere Portion of the Old Level 2 Rules.

Mostly correct. It also encompasses any "Star League/post-3050 Inner Sphere" technology (see pg121 Tech Manual.) Thus, it's not limited to "old" Level 2 rules.

Quote:

F: Clans Technology and Industry Level.

And post-3065 Inner Sphere.

Other definitions of availability are found on pg274+ of the Tech Manual.

But what about post 3070 stuff? Would it just fall into the F category?

Depends on the gear. Some "recent" gear - like modular armor, or hardened armor, or rocket launchers - are not "rocket science." Tech Manual and Tactical Operations gives the tech rating of each item of equipment.

The Tech Rating is only good for RPG settings. It is more of can a house or group have access to it, is it common or extremely rare aka you are not going to have it unless you are apart of the ultra cool groups who have all the high tech toys and prototypes.

Beyond that they are pointless for a battle or one on one mech fight.

Biases like ...

Insisting that they keep their story's straight?

Classic BattleTech RPG 3rd Edition
Combat Equipment Guide
and how many different times are they going to revise something?

The Original Tech B

Makes some sense since the original Tech A had little to do with machines (as in hand made machines)

OTOH, not really a needed change

another unneeded change, instead of centuries, this gives tech B only 50 Years or so...

I did not Imply or state that it was limited to the old level 2 innersphere rules.

and finally a good change...

Cray, how are they going to handle Bow, Arrow, & Swords in Classic BattleTech RPG 4th Edition if they have skewed the Tech Table to start with Machine Technologies?
