Y'now, I don't think I've posted a design on Sarna since before 2001? Thought I'd remedy that with this puppy, a custom 'Mech I've submitted for the Fan Councils game over on classicbattletech.com, as one of my custom units for the Niops Association.

Key elements: maintain the Charger movement profile of 5/8, improve it with the addition of jump jets, and continue to allow it to function as a "heavy recon" unit, yet enough firepower to actually accomplish something on the battlefield. Hence, Beagle Probe and Guardian ECM, a bank of seven medium lasers for close-in defense, and a single ER large laser for ranged work. Armor is improved considerably over the original, and for added defense, as well as cutting its overall sensor signature, a Null Sig system. Originally, I'd also wanted to include a Chameleon Light Polarization system, but I didn't have enough free criticals for one thing, and I can't figure out how to add it into HeavyMetal Pro for the other. Still, I think this works.

Thoughts?

Hm, it's interesting, and it certainly gives the Charger a new battle use/profile. However, I still don't know about the Null-Sig. I guess they could use it as a real "surprise!" factor, but other than that problem I really like what I see.

Null Sig, per Tactical Operations, has some nifty side affects, like being undetectable by Beagle-level (Clan or IS) Active Probes, and a +1 defensive modifier at medium range, which increases to +2 at long and, if you're using the optional rules for it, extreme range. Sure, it's +10 heat to run it, but it's still pretty worthwhile, IMO.

On the other hand, someone did figure out a halfway-decent way to add the Chameleon Light Polarization System in HMP: just make a 0-mass, 1-critical, 1-heat, 100,000 C-Bill item, add six to your 'Mech, allocate them properly by hand (one in each limb, one in each side torso), and you're good to go. HMP doesn't calculate the BV for it, so you've got to modify that by hand, but, otherwise, you're set.

Running the Chameleon LPS and Null Sig together, again per Tac Ops, is pretty fearsome: you've got a +2 defensive modifier at medium range, which bumps up to +4 at long or extreme ranges. That's before movement. Factor movement in, and a Royal Charger with both could hit as high as +7 for its defensive modifier. That's...well, that's pretty frakin' scary for an 80-ton BattleMech.

With that in mind, I present the CGR-1A1c. Critical slot limitations forced the removal of endo steel and a heat sink, which, in turn, forced the removal of three of the medium lasers to make the overall mass work, which has the odd benefit of looking more like the original Charger, given its five lasers. BV listed is incorrect - it's actually 2039 with both Null Sig and Chameleon.
