HoC Gaming - An Open Letter to Past and Present Nev'ers
      #156183 - 08/27/09 07:01 AM (24.19.231.129)

This is an open letter to all past and present Neveronians and Invasion 3042 players.

Most likely you have at some point fought with, or against, HoC or well established HoC players. Due to the nature of these niche games we play (or as in my case, played) it has been easy for individuals and groups to develop troubled relationships.

There is probably not a single person reading this that is not painfully aware of the acrimonious relationships found within our subset of the online CBT community. But these difficult spots very effectively conceal something even stronger, and that is the unusually cohesive bonds that exist within our community.

I'm not simply talking bonds within factions, groups, guilds or alliances. I'm pointing out the bonds that exist within our community as a whole. If you put down the pitchfork long enough, it is exceedingly easy to see.

And that is what I have decided to do. Put down the pitchfork. I actually put it down years ago (though some of you found that difficult to see past your own pitchforks), so what I have decided to do right now is go one step further.

I'd like to extend a hand in gaming comeraderie and invite you to play with us here in HoC Gaming.

What? Why would I join HoC? Isn't HoC dead? I THOUGHT HOC DID NOT PLAY HERE (for you I3042'ers out there)?

I can hear some of the questions, so let me do my best to explain to you what I am talking about, and what HoC Gaming is.

As you can imagine, HoC Gaming was formed to support the online gaming exploits of a core of players that formed back in the day on Neveron. However, while Nev HoC began to die, along with the game's community at large, back around '06 or so, hocgaming.com was not founded until 2008. Even with Invasion 3042 players thrown in the mix (Taurian Concordat, Clan Widowmaker, etc), the community was already too heavily disintegrated to flourish.

What HoC Gaming became, then, was that indispensible tool of cohesion and organization that allowed a small group of players to continue dominating their chosen game.

But it must be said: HoC Gaming is not HoC, nor is it Clan Widowmaker, or the focus of any other game of which it is intimately connected, and joining HoC Gaming does not convey anyone membership to those factions or alliances. HoC Gaming is a social construct, intended to provide a framework around which friends could continue to keep in touch, and play games together. That remains, to this day, the fundamental intent of this group.

But one very real aspect of our particular group is the fact that we have never really been that isolated from the community of which we were born. Many of us have known each other for years, and we pride ourselves on the facts of these long standing friendships. But the same can be said for many of you. Perhaps most of you.

It took small logic then, but unfortunately a long time, to see that the potential of this greater community was far larger than the sum of its parts.

It is for this reason that I would like to invite you to consider joining HoC Gaming. Perhaps you will never fight alongside us on Neveron or Invasion 3042, but that's ok. There can be warfare, and enjoyment, even amongst friends.

But the real benefit, to both you and us, is in our mutual history playing these games together. We are more familiar with you, and you are more familiar with us, than many actual guild members are of one another on more distant games.

What does HoC Gaming stand to provide, then?

- A firmly entrenched multi game social guild to belong to, that keeps you part of this community even after you have had your fill of Nev or I3042. We play a lot of different games, from pay MMO's to browser games.

- Friends of known quantity to organize and play upcoming games with (we are putting together an Aion team, for instance).

- A social structure that serves to mitigate much and perhaps all of the hostility inherent to the games you currently play, instilling greater good will amongst each other. After all, if you play with someone in other games, or talk to them daily in Vent, being their opponent once in a while becomes less emotionally charged, and more what? That's right, FUN. We've had PK between players that did not result in hate, simply because we are all friends at the end of the day. It is indeed that simple.

HoC Gaming is not Nev HoC. It was simply founded by former Nev HoC players. We are a social multi game guild, not focused on any one game or genre (our current two focus games are EVE Online and Aion), and we would be happy to talk with you should you be interested in considering your future as a Harbinger.

Get in touch with Kato via forums or IRC at your convenience. And do not be concerned that your history as an opponent of HoC/CWM/etc, or as an opponent of me personally, will matter. What matters is your interest and willingness to take our community more seriously than any one game we play, your desire to make new friends, and your ability to be fair, rational and mature in your war with fellow HoC Gaming members on games in which it occurs (Nev/Invasion).

Best regards, and I look forward to hearing from some of you.
