Overview:
The Greaves is the medium weight workhorse of four Battlemechs released to the
market in 2729 in the aftermath of the Davion War of Succession. Losses of
lives for the Battlemech owning nobility was a centuries long problem for all
of the Great Houses that reached a fever pitch of concern in Davion space as a
result of the war. The panic easily spread to the Free Worlds League due to
its own Marik Civil War and then on to the rest of the Inner Sphere.

The Greaves, and other Battlemechs in the line designated by "SB," were
specifically designed to keep the "Mama's Boys"/"Daddy's Little Girls" of the
Great Houses safe on the battlefield. To those ends, each design uses a
Null-Signature System, heavy armor for its class, C.A.S.E., durable standard
engine configurations, jump jets (except in the assault class), an
anti-infantry weapon (you don't want one of those scenes where the peasants
ambush the prince's horse, drag him off, and beat him to death - only
Battletech style.), a long-range main gun (so there is no need to get to close
to the action), and a solid short-range weapon, so that the little darling can
look spectacular finishing off his/her lancemates hard work.

Production ceased in 2790. The Null-Signature System had proven too expensive,
fragile, and hot for most MechWarriors. So, the company producing it folded
and the technology went into the history books. Without replacement parts for
the stealth system the number of Greaves soon began to drop. None are believed
to have survived ROM's 2838 Operation Holy Shroud.

The Greaves' main gun is an ERPPC backed up by three medium lasers and a SRM-6.
A small pulse laser fills the anti-infantry role, and an additional medium
laser guards the rear arc. The Greaves was typically piloted by low to middle
ranking royals who were loyal to the realm, serving in the military
voluntarily. Although somewhat expensive for this group of nobles, loyalty had
its rewards, and pulling the right strings often covered the cost of the
Null-Signature System and the main gun.

Capabilities:
The Greaves is a bit slow compared to other medium Battlemechs, leaving a
question as to whether or not it could perform its function of keeping its
royal pilot safe. Tangling with fellow 55-ton Griffins or Wolverines highlight
the problem. However, for the Greaves to function in the medium-workhorse role
of 40-55 ton mechs, and the loyal nature of the class of nobility purchasing
them, slower speed in exchange for heavier short-range firepower was deemed
necessary.

As a workhorse, with a solid short-range weapons array, and piloted by loyal
MechWarriors, the Greaves often found itself in the middle of the action rather
than on the edges of it. As a result, the Null-Signature System's advantage
was, well, nullified, and Greaves ended up taking a lot of damage. Repairs and
parts were very expensive. The expense was driven higher by a sever shortage
of repair parts in 2788 as interest and production in the "SB" line of
Battlemechs began its quick decline into obsolescence in 2790. As a result,
the decline in Greaves was occurring faster from cannibalization than from
battlefield losses.
