I'm new and could use some help. I have completed (I think) the tutorial. I'm loyal to a fault and looking for a crew to run with. I played BattleTech when I was younger and loved it. I'm not promising I'll stay forever but if the game is good, I play for the long haul. I guess I'm looking for advice and/or a faction to join.

I hate to say it, but this probably isn't the Battletech experience you're looking for. These forums are pretty dead - mostly it's one or two guys posting, and that's it. The admins are 99% absent too, and the game is basically running on autopilot. Save yourself some anguish over joining a dead game and move on to something else.

Two months to rebut my reply *golf clap*
(I think that actually proves my point that no one plays and no one's on the forums)

It proves nothing really. The Sarna forum has for most of Nev's history only been used for political squabbling and business relations. Aka malcontents, power brokers and the business obsessed. The normal folks never had much of a presense here. Its been the realm of we the nutcases who organize things.
The reason the forum is so rarely used now, is that politics has divided to the point where theres only really two sides in most people's minds. So theres no reason to do business or power broker here when you have private rooms with those 'faces' already there for real time. Where politics of you and the other guy are either so similiar or do divided that business is a given or nearly impossible. Theres no point from the perspective in fishing on the forum for such affairs. That just leaves the malconents, most of which just yell in public mail, where there more likely to be seen, seeing the forum's current lack of usefulness.
Like the last couple times it was divided along 2 lines, it'll get broken up. Well as long as the server doesn't stop first. ;-)

I both agree and disagree with you, Lionheart.
I think...
The game's community has dwindled until only the iron nugget core is left, so there's nothing dynamic about the community any more. In that regard I agree with you that people just don't wander out of their IRC rooms any more. But I don't think it has to do with the polarization of Nev politics. I think its just that everyone knows the game is dead except for the eventual (maybe distant but still eventual) shutdown, and they just don't care any more.
Forums were active when people thought there was a future to this game. And over time as people left, and the wisdom of the day transitioned from "Nev's future is in jeapardy" to "Nev's future doesn't exist", even the die hard forum-ites stopped caring enough to post shit.
Another aspect of the death of Nev's sarna activity has been admin's abandonment of the game. A good 1/3 to half of the forum activity we've ever seen has been directly or indirectly aimed at Randy or Wayward Son. Now that it's clear there will never be legit admin activity on Nev again (unless it is sold), this aspect of forum use is dead too.
And finally, since there are no real new players of note any more (or at least, they are exceedingly rare), that critical component of self sustainment to a community (fresh meat) has sealed the deal.
The forums were always the playground of the influential on Nev, you are very right about that, but they weren't the exclusive playground. I think those three things are the root cause of the tumbleweeds here today.
Course, it is all pretty obvious. But just sayin'.

Randy and Greg dont have to kill off the new playres, you guys are doing it for them.
As far as any new players, if you want to checkout the game, my advice is to get into chat of possible. If for some reason you can not access chat, then send me a private message here.
I am more than happy and willing to help you get started as well as answer any questions that you may have about the game. Yes, the game does have bugs and internal programs crash from time to time, but it is NOT dead yet.
