Need clarification

I've been jumping in to the Tourney now and again, but need a few clarifications on some things I see.

1) initiative - Most often, I'll see my initiative roll coming out at 2 or 3.
2) AI(?) - Regardless of my initiative roll, I'll very often be 'out piloted' by another target - they (it) will move around to my flank, very often - even when I move to arbitrary directions, AND even when I've seen my initiative as high as 13. My assumption is that these are AI targets, and move AFTER player targets.
3) Piloting / Gunnery skills too random - 4/4 is fine. I can even deal with 5/5. Though, 3 out of the last 10 runs, I've had 7/7. That's pretty much someone who's never piloted ANYTHING in their life. Ironically, I was in a Whirlwind (? I think that's what it was, 5 small lasers, 2 hatchets) - and I was able to beat up on an assault by jumping around; Still, however, THAT target would continuously move illogically as if it always knew where I would move.
4) Multi-targets? I've tried firing 1 weapon at one of two targets in hopes to be able to fire at the second target - but no receive no option?

great questions!

when you say 'tourney' i think you are refering to the Free For All [FFA] after reading your entire post.

there is also 'Arenas' where you are dueling 1 vs 1 live player and others can place bets etc. this is also refered to as 'dueling'.

in this case i will reply assuming that your questions are for the FFA.

init is a lil complex to explain in detail HOW it works, but the jist is this. Every unit in every battle has to be given an order in which it will move / fire, in relation to every other unit in that same battle. A slow cumbersome tank will often be required to move first, meaning it would have a low init, like 3 or 4. a skilled mech, more agile, would be more likely to get an init of say 10 in that same battle.

if the mech is in fact run by Artifical Intelligence [AI], then it 'refreshs' its view of the map every 10 seconds [i think its 10 seconds = 1 init] and it can then 'see' where other lower init units moved to, and adjust its movement based on that new intel. i can move in behind, or i can decide to back off to improve my weapons range, or what ever. Any player can do that same thing, but it requires a balance of making your move and trying to keep the map refreshed to 'see' the units moves that have taken place since the last map refreash.

AI does not get any special turn ranking over player based moves. it is all the init, and the computer can 'react' faster to last minute changes than a real player can, especially when factoring in computer / connection lag between the player and the servers. AI is on the server, so there is literally no lag for it.

live players can not target multiple enemies. AI however, currently can. Hopefully that is something that can be fixed in the future. Whether to allow player to multi target, or remove the ability from AI, is still up for debate.

As far as gun skills and random units. well, its random. its supposed to be.
there is some formula that is used, but to be honest ive never heard many official details about how it works exactly. higher level empires pay a higher entrance fee, and are supposed to be able to get 'better' units because of that. However, the random draw currently in use, tends to chase away higher level empires from entering often, as they spend a lot more money to enter, and deal with similar random issues like you are seeing.
