Grenadier GRN-4G
Mass: 70 tons Tech Base: Inner Sphere Chassis Config: Biped Rules Level: Tournament Legal Era: Clan Invasion Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E Production Year: 3070 Cost: 7.362.473 C-Bills Battle Value: 1.520
Chassis: Randam series ESIII Endo-Steel Power Plant: VLARII 280 Fusion Engine Walking Speed: 43,2 km/h Maximum Speed: 64,8 km/h Jump Jets: None Jump Capacity: 0 meters Armor: Randam-Valliant FF Ferro-Fibrous w/ CASE Armament: 1 LB 10-X AC 1 Large Pulse Laser 1 LRM-10 2 Medium Pulse Lasers 1 C3 Computer (Slave) Manufacturer: Randam Mechwerks Primary Factory: Unknown Communications System: Randam screecher Targeting and Tracking System: Randam push button
Overview: First noted during the Clan invasion was the problem of reconciling the limited skills of a green mechwarrior with the technologial boom in Battletechnology. The Grenadier is an attempt to fix this problem.
Capabilities: Green mechwarriors are either assigned to an older machine or given a more powerful new design. In the first case it assumes that the older design will not be much of a loss should the mechwarrior make a mistake. In the second it assumes that the better technology will give the mechwarrior a further advantage and better survival chances. Neither options have given full satisfaction so far.
The Grenadier is a rugged, solid design, capable of taking a beating and incorporating advanced weaponry that has a higher accuracy, making up for limited shooting skills.
The chassis is based on a solid endo-steel skeleten protected by 12 tons of ferro-fibrous armour. The actuators are designed to be solid and resistant to pilot error.
The main armament is composed of an LB-10X and a Large Pulse Laser. Both weapons have a "spray" which allows an easier target acquisition. The secondary armament is made up of an LRM10 with the option of using swarm ammo and a pair of medium pulse lasers for use against targets at close range.
A C3 slave allows the mech to tie into a network and ease targeting.
Even though the Grenadier is designed with green pilots in mind, it is quite effective in the hands of a skilled pilot, though they may favour a different variant.
Though designers selected a regular engine for increased reliability, the Grenadier is considered slow and lacks jump jets. With a relatively weak long-range capability the risk exists that the Grenadier can be attacked at range by faster opponents.
Battle History: The Grenadier saw limited action as a prototype during the Fed-Com civil war. Many units were delivered during the Jihad where they accounted well for themselves.
Some feared that the specific mission profile for this mech might mark it out as a choice target, but by mixing green and veteran pilots, those attacking the Grenadier often paid it with their lives.
In some cases highly trained pilots have used Grenadiers to draw enemy troops into a carefully laid trap.
Deployment: Avaiable in large numbers in the initial days of the Jihad, the destruction of the Randam Mechwerks factories halted production until after the war. Many were picked up by the Republic and used for training purposes and militia duty.
Variants: One variant, the 4H, model replaces the Large Pulse Laser with a Snub-nose PPC, while switching the LB-X autocannon for an ultra model, and trading the medium pulse lasers for ER medium lasers. Though it lacks the inherent accuracy of the former weapons, it gives a better range and damage profile, preferred by more skilled pilots.
The 4I variant replaces the autocannon with a Heavy PPC and extra heat sinks and adds another ton of LRM ammo.

I would rather put a green pilot into a older design light or medium weight mech, so if they screw up I would not lose an expensive mech.
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.
I was a Major *pain* before
But I got a promotion.
I am now a General *pain*
Yay for promotions!!!

Dang!
I met a guy recently that knew the basic of BT and we got into some semi-regular games over the last year. I helped him design his first mech, and he picked this name! I've been on him to post it here for critiquing.... snooze you loose!!!
BTW, The base chasis are almost identical! Both 70 tons, 280 standard and endo steel DHS. Other than that his design was all "level 1" tech armor/weapons.
Anyways, this thread is about your creation, not his. I was suprised at the basic similarities. I think you did an exelent job on design fluf. I liked that you mentioned the extreme long range vulnerability to fast moving harasser mechs. Also, liked the bit about the newbie pilots with "scatter" weapons.
That LRM just seems....weak.
Got specs on the Veteran version with the Ultra AC and ER Lasers?
Overall I get the image/feel of an Inner Sphere Thor/Summoner...

That LRM15 + ARTIV will be a nasty suprise when only expecting an unaugmented LRM10...
