Template syntax crashcourse please!

I'm going to redesign some InfoBox templates on BTW. I want the template to show no empty boxes. As far as I understand what I see, I can suppress a given line through the "if" operator. I can discern some syntax from looking at the various existing infobox templates, but I don't think I have quite understood the syntax for conditional entries yet. Can anyone provide a crash course, or point me in the right direction please?
