Buzzard BUZ-1E
Mass: 20 tons Tech Base: Inner Sphere Chassis Config: Biped Rules Level: Tournament Legal Era: Clan Invasion Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E Production Year: 3067 Cost: 1,982,100 C-Bills Battle Value: 636
Chassis: Unknown Standard Power Plant: Unknown 120 Compact Fusion Engine Walking Speed: 64.8 km/h Maximum Speed: 97.2 km/h Jump Jets: None Jump Capacity: 0 meters Armor: Unknown Heavy Ferro-Fibrous Armament: 2 ER Medium Lasers 2 Medium Lasers 1 Small Laser Manufacturer: Unknown Primary Factory: Unknown Communications System: Unknown Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown
Overview: Named after a bird of prey the Buzzard was designed by the federate suns as a light scout hunter. Even though the mech maybe majorly undergunned in comparison to other 20 ton light mechs such as the commando it make up for this by utilizing unqiue and advanced IS technologies in conjunction to the already existant ones prior to the sucession wars. This mech has seen limited combat but has been noted by several mechwarriors to be a light fast moving highly survivable scout mech as well as a light vangaurd support mech. It has been also known to be fairly popular amongst solaris light mech pilots due to it's cost effectiveness.
Capabilities: The Buzzard although lackluster in terms of firepower. It's main capabilities are made within it's movement,Armour and the independancey from Ammunition. Due to the simple yet fairly effective enregy based weapons laodout the Buzzard can stay within the fight for almost indefinate againt other mechs of it's class. This is also improved upon by the utilization of a compact fusion engine to decrease the chances of the mech main power plant from being disabled.
Battle History: Althoguh it has seen limited combat in a skirmish with kuritain light mechs of similar tonnage. It's simplistic yet effective wepaons loadout has been proven to mildly damage the armour on heavier chasis.
Deployment: The traditional roles that such as mech plays are that of the light scout role for finding and report new threats. It has also been used within the sherman like methods of the lgiht CQB fighter role. the Buzzard's medium ranged wepaons layout makes it formidable foe if engaged at medium to clsoe range combat.
Variants: As of the time being there no variant of this mech avaible however there are romour's that more variations of this mech will be made into mass production models.

Under gunned? Compared to what?
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.
I was a Major *pain* before
But I got a promotion.
I am now a General *pain*
Yay for promotions!!!

You cant expect a mech that has a compact PP to have any speed.
I really don't like light mechs; I think their a wast of C-Bills. But if it was my design, I would have given it a 240XL PP for a speed of 12/18 and not worry about the PP taking up the extra crit spaces. But that is me.

What was the thinking behind the compact engine? You're not starved for space and it hinders a light unit like this whose only really defense is speed.
Unless it's the heat sinks, but an engine with a higher rating will hide some of those.

I thought that it was to make the engine harder to hit since the mech has so little armor.
Anyways you keep saying that it makes them have more character

On a light 'Mech, usual damage mitigation features like compact engines don't matter much because the 'Mech is usually pretty well toast once it starts taking torso internal structure damage.
OTOH, in an assault 'Mech, an XL engine may be an unnecessary vulnerability because the 'Mech can survive repeated torso internal structure hits even from heavy weapons. An Atlas can live through two Gauss Rifle strikes to its CT IS, to say nothing of swarms of crit-generating SRMs and LBX pellets. A compact engine works well there.

There's "slightly quirky sense of humor but basically good folks" character and there's "neurotic with a habit of urinating in potted plants" character. A 20-ton hunter 'Mech has plenty of character just by getting onto the modern battlefield. No need to go overboard.
Even switching to a standard fusion engine frees up elbow room on this 'Mech; no need to over-tech the design with an XL (though XLs work well on lights). The 120 Compact can be swapped with a 160 standard, which lets you hide 2 more heat sinks and frees up 3 total crits.

The unfortunate thing is that its just a lighter, faster Mongoose.
But don't take that as disapproval. I've got one like it, too. Everyone should have one.
Even with the new equipment there seems to be a light mech bar set by the Mongoose, and to some extent Locust varients, that is hard to pass. An innovation ceiling. Speed and medium lasers just make sense and are hard to beat.
