Overview: Shattered by the end of the Jihad, Randam Mechwerks was on the brink of collapse. With most of its industrial potential destroyed or appropriated by various houses after the war, the need to produce a profitable new design became critical.
Capabilities: Randam Mechwerks was able to resume limited production of several mech lines, but the company required to make a statement and show that it was still a force on the market. Once more they turned to the profitable mercenary market and produced the Jotun.
The Jotun is a fire support assault mech designed to hang back and bombard the enemy at range while its lancemates close in for the kill.
The Jotun takes its cue from the Battlemaster, and uses the same chassis, suitably modified and reinforced to support the weight of a 90 ton mech. Like the Battlemaster it has a roomy cockpit and carries a similar weapon loadout of arm-mounted gun, missile launchers and multiple medium lasers.
The main armament includes a gauss rifle and a pair of LRM 15 launchers. For short range defense, the Jotun mounts six ER medium lasers. The Jotun makes use of convential technology for most of its structure. 13 double strength heat sinks allow it to keep its main weaponry heat level under control except for the most protracted close range engagements.
The cheap, but efficient design has one major weakness, the lack of an XL engine means that the Jotun has a top speed barely exceeding 52 kph, lacking MASC or jump jets. This is a problem in running battles, but the long range nature of its main weaponry makes it an effective trooper and defender mech.
Variants: The 3G version attemps to make the Jotun more versatile, while keeping costs down. It replaces the gauss rifle with a conventional Autocannon 10 while replacing the twin arm mounted medium lasers with a single ER large laser. This version can make use of advanced missile and autocannon ammunition, about 20% of the production consists of 3G models.
The 5G version has been proposed and would feature a larger, more powerful XL engines. No further information was available at the time of writing.

Interesting mix of weapons that have become very common in the IS and as well as Clan space.

If you have this set up in two distinct weapon groups, you wouldn't need so many heatsinks if you went with regular lasers or a mixture of regular and ER.
