Overview:
The Sabaton is the heavy class bruiser of four Battlemechs released to the
market in 2729 in the aftermath of the Davion War of Succession. Losses of
lives for the Battlemech owning nobility was a centuries long problem for all
of the Great Houses, and it reached a fever pitch of concern in Davion space as
a result of the war. The panic easily spread to the Free Worlds League due to
its own Marik Civil War and then on to the rest of the Inner Sphere.

The Sabaton, and other Battlemechs in the line designated by "SB," were
specifically designed to keep the "Mama's Boys"/"Daddy's Little Girls" of the
Great Houses safe on the battlefield. To those ends, each design uses a
Null-Signature System, heavy armor for its class, C.A.S.E., durable standard
engine configurations, jump jets (except in the assault class), an
anti-infantry weapon (you don't want one of those scenes where the peasants
ambush the prince's horse, drag him off, and beat him to death - only
Battletech style.), a long-range main gun (so there is no need to get to close
to the action), and a solid short-range weapon (so that the little darling can
look spectacular finishing off his/her lancemates hard work).

Production ceased in 2790. The Null-Signature System had proven too expensive,
fragile, and hot for most MechWarriors. So, the company producing it folded
and the technology went into the history books. Without replacement parts for
the stealth system, the value of the parts sky rocketed – they were in
particularly high demand by pilots of Greaves. Sabaton pilots frequently took
advantage of this boon by removing and selling off the heat intensive system,
socking away enough C-bills to buy a light replacement battlemech, should the
unthinkable happen in combat, and still have enough money left over to throw a
few parties. This practice reduced ROM’s interest in the surviving Sabatons
when it began its Operation Holy Shroud in 2838, which, along with the ease of
downgrading the extended range laser weapons systems and heat sinks, allowed
the Sabaton to become the most long-standing battlemech of the “SB” line. The
last (significantly downgraded) Sabaton was destroyed on Ford in Lyran space in
2872 during the Third Succession War.

The Sabaton’s main guns are ER Large Lasers, which are complemented by an
LRM-5. These are backed up by an SRM-4. A pair of small pulse lasers fill the
anti-infantry role, one in the forward arc and one in the rear arc. The
Sabaton was typically piloted by princes and princesses of a planetary ruling
royal family and any cousins who might have a stake in the throne.

Capabilities:
The Sabaton excels at long-range, direct-fire support, and thus it is perfect
for keeping its royal pilot out of battlefield furballs. 120 meters of jump
capacity help the Sabaton maintain its range and position itself in hard to
reach places. These factors, combined with the Null-Signature System, made the
Sabaton a very capable command vehicle as well. The Sabaton’s ER Large Lasers
preformed well at short range, too, and the pilot could switch from the LRMs to
the SRM-4. As a result Sabatons were not a favorite target of light and medium
battlemechs trying to harass support battlemechs or perform hit-and-run
maneuvers. However, this weapons arrangement was not well suited to short
range combat with equal sized battlemechs, and duels rarely went well for
Sabatons, unless the pilot managed to maintain a long range.

Battle History:
A CMCDesings marking executive, who was trying to fast track his career
advancement, decided to try and seize a slice of the market share from
StarCorps Industries’ Warhammer, in spite of its 200+ years of solid
performance and its design for a completely different role. A very aggressive ad
campaign was approved highlighting the Sabaton’s long-range advantages and
survivability features. It wasn’t long before the two battlemechs went head to
head. Things did not go well for the Sabaton, which got completely trashed in
a short-range battle with the venerable Warhammer. Although militarily
classified, the battle-rom of the combat leaked and went viral under the title
“Warhammer vs. Wussie-hammer. The nickname stuck, great sales never
materialized, and the executive was replaced, despite the fact that the
Sabaton’s long-range fire power really was as good as the Warhammer’s, and it
had better maneuverability. When interviewed about the debacle, CMCDesigns
owner/CEO said, “The Warhammer is designed to trash other battlemechs. The
Sabaton is designed to keep its pilot alive. The pilot walked away from the
incident, so I guess we both [CMCDesigns and StarCorps Industries] succeeded.”

Variants:
A fully downgraded Sabaton replaces it double heatsinks with single heat sinks,
but it still handles its heat well because the hot ER large lasers are replaced
with standard large lasers. The arm mounted small pulse laser is replaced with
a pair of machine guns with a half ton of ammo in the torso; and the rear
mounted pulse laser is replaced with two rear-facing small lasers.

Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
The last two Sabaton 630-SB were piloted by cousins, colonel Chai Wan Chan and
major Tran Fu Wang on St. Loris in the Capellan Confederation. By 2840
Cappellan Intellegence security head, known only as Mr. Cho, noticed that
something was going on with the Null-Signature System equipped battlemechs,
which also appeared to be tied to leaks in his own organization. He decided
that these last two Sabaton needed to be commandeered and put under state
protection. Chancellor Laurelli Liao agreed. And Mr. Cho commissioned a
single agent to travel covertly via normal routes to St Loris and quietly get
the Sabaton off planet while Mr. Cho set up a special command circuit to usher
them away. Before the agent arrived the Federated Suns launched a raid against
the Cappellen world, putting the two Sabaton in harms way.

During the final push by the Suns, Chan and Wang received orders to pull out and
rendezvous with the special agent. They were never heard from or seen again.
Chan’s command lance members escorted him. Their wreaked mechs and bodies were
located at their last know position, where communications chatter indicated a
fire fight was taking place. Four other mechs of old, Star League origin, but
with Suns markings, also lay smashed at the sight. The odd thing was that the
markings were for the wrong Suns unit, and the mechs had clearly been smashed
by an AC-20 – but none of Chan’s lacemates carried one.

Major Wang’s last transmission came from area of the Nu Yanz River crossing,
where he had come under attack. Again four Star League era mechs with fake
insignias littered the ground, tangled with the remains of a Capellan Atlas
whose ammunition bins had been set off. The left forearm of Wang’s mech was in
the wreckage. The limb had be cut off just below the location where the
Null-Signature circuitry was located.

Legend claims these men and their machines traveled the stars from this point
forward in a special research dropship and jumpship that was constantly on the
move to maintain security. It is aboard this ship that the Confederation
perfected its ECM research and ultimately its stealth armor system. This,
however, seems unlikely. The Confederation’s ECM development is well
documented and closely linked to the Helm Core discovery. The stealth armor’s
operation seems to have little in common with historical descriptions of the
null-signature system, other than heat production and targeting effects.

Currently the Confederation is using the legend to build national solidarity in
the region of St. Loris (and CMCD is using it for contractual gain). In a
special ground breaking on the anniversary of Chan’s and Wang’s
disappearance, the Chancellor’s emissary announced construction of a new factory
to once again produce Sabaton, but with stealth armor this time. Promotional
specifications hightlight several other new technologies too, including an MML-5 and an
extra-light gyroscope. Production is slated to start in the fall of 3075 with
a prototype built at the facility by 3073.
