Code Fest
      #163250 - 01/09/12 04:54 PM (24.103.210.226)

Starting January 29th and running until February 11th, Neveron will be undergoing a major overhaul. Somewhere along the planning stages of this event it picked up the name 'Code Fest'. However much more than 'Code' will be worked on! The following items are on the agenda:

  • Hardware Migration - The new servers will be installed
  • Software Modernization - Operating System [OS] and Database Management Software [DBMS] upgrades
  • Server Connection - This should bring all existing programs back online allowing proper functioning once again, including Arenas and Free For All
  • Administration - Tools will be implemented to simplfy daily operations and managment of Neveron
  • Login Registration - This process will be updated and empire ownership rules enforced
  • Database Maintenance - Maintenance programs designed, implemented and automated
  • Bugs - Issues that have an impact across the entire game will be addressed
  • Loopholes - Issues that have an impact across the entire game will be addressed
  • Security - Current security protocols will be reviewed and improved as needed
  • Performance - Streamline existing programs for better performance
  • Misc - Various other tasks as time allows

There is no exact timeline as to what items will be addressed when or how long any particular item will take to accomplish.

This announcement is simply a heads up to the players that this time period will experience some short downs times. With any major changes like the ones mentioned above, there is also the possibility of interuptions in normal functions of game play. Plan your actions accordingly, and avoid war actions and significant changes to your empire between now and the end of Code Fest.

Please submit Help Tickets for any game wide BUGS or LOOPHOLES that you would like considered for review during Code Fest.

Recently came across some 'bench mark' data...some of you might appreciate this!

Based on CPU values:

Current Hardware 'running' Neveron
  • Pentium III @ 797 MHz = ~201
  • Pentium III x 2 @ 933 MHz = 221
  • Pentium 4 [Dual Core] @ 2.4 GHz = 313
  • Pentium 4 x 4 [Xeon MP Quad Core] @ 1.6 GHz = 485

New Hardware installing during Code Fest
  • Xeon x 2 [Dual Core] 5160 @ 3.0 GHz = 3941
  • Xeon x 2 [Dual Core] E5405 @ 2.0 GHz = 6146
  • Xeon x 2 [Dual Core] X5355 @ 2.6 GHz = 6837
  • Xeon x 2 [Dual Core] E5440 @ 2.83 GHz = 8523

So as you can see, we should get "some" performance boost from the new hardware!

Day 1 & Day 2 [Re: ShadowMasterCM]
      #163597 - 01/30/12 09:50 AM (24.103.210.226)

Well day one of code fest is behind us!

Mostly dealing with hardware issues, some minor bumps as expected, more time consuming than difficult, but we pressed on and made some minor progress.

Much of the same hardware tweaking will occur today [Day 2] as well. Working on installing more of the commercial software later today as well.

Day 2 [Re: ShadowMasterCM]
      #163600 - 01/30/12 08:27 PM (24.103.210.226)

did stuff...

hehehe

OK so I was going to post that the game was going to go offline overnight while we made a complete database backup, and would begin work on bringing it back online tommorow morning...

However the web server and router are having a small tiff atm...and I cant get the web server to come back up to post said message!

I hate just taking the site offline, with out some sort of info at the login page...but seems I dont have a choice for tonight...

So...

Game will be offline for the next 12 - 15 hours while databases are copied and web server quirks are sorted out

Some initial issues getting the web server and router to place nice resulted in Neveron being offline from roughly 10PM Day 1 to 10AM Day 2. It was realized early this morning that it was not the web server was the issue, but in fact on of the HDs on the main DB server had started to fail, and completely died this AM as we began working on it.

At that point we had to scramble to try to salvage the DB from a machine in cardiac arrest...it was a rather stressful morning to say the least. The failed drive literally 'BEEPED' from 10AM to somewhere around 2 or 3 PM...every 2 seconds!

We resolved the issues with the web server and put up the 'Maintenance' page, letting players know the game was actually offline, during further maintenance and upgrades.

So then we finally resolved the issues with the main DB server, got things copied and moved to the new server. The 2nd database has been backed up, and we will start the install process of that server on Day 4. We anticipate this last server install to be the most difficult.

Players SHOULD NOT try to actively war during the next 24 to 48h!

Most players have noticed significant performance improvements already. Hopefully we will see additional performance when the terrain server is up and running!

oh yeah...we did more stuff! ;O)

Dealing with some additional issues moving the second DB. This was expected to be the most difficult part of the move, and it has been. Will have to continue to work on it tomorrow

The map views where disabled for several hours during the day, but we managed to get that database loaded by the end of the day. We will work on getting the various independent programs back up and running tomorrow.

oh yeah, and we did more stuff ;O)

All new servers are now in place

Artificial Intelligence [AI] is also now running on new servers

Auto Battle Resolution [ABR] is also running on new servers

Zone Conquer is running on new servers

So that we can begin to 'debug' these programs and make sure that they are working properly, we need empires at war, and units in battle. Sooo...

GO KILL STUFF!

Mass Decomm/Scrap and Towers programs are a few examples of programs that are still not running. Training will also likely get addressed on Day 6

ARENAS ARE RUNNING!

I REPEAT...

ARENAS ARE RUNNING!!

FFA is also PAYING NCash prize money again!!!

PS: We did more stuff
