.. and now for something completely different ...
Anyone still around who remembers the early days of the FFA?
Do you remember the FFA special event when only Stone Rhino (and or Nemesis?) Mechs spawned in the FFA instead of randomly assigned units? - Now that was fun, or wasn't it?
I don't know who of the old admins modified the code for the special FFA event back then, but wouldn't it be nice if such a special FFA event returned at least once a year (real time, of course)?
The old modified code for the FFA special event might be still around, buried somewhere on an old backup harddrive, or one of the old admins might remember how he patched the FFA code to spawn Stone Rhino and or Nemesis Mechs only.
Might have been a rather simple modification, like skipping the FFA random unit selector code part (simply turn this code section into a remark, well, that's what I would have done if using PHP, ASP might require a different approach, unfamiliar with ASP code, sorry) and insert a few lines of code which spawn either a Stone Rhino or a Nemesis upon FFA entry, et voilą: FFA Stone Rhino / Nemesis special event.
And if a first, more or less clumsy, FFA mod fails, or needs more fixing / patching, no big deal, no vital empire assets affected, only some Nevcash to refund - in a worst case scenario, that is if a high level empire lost a billion plus Nevcash as entrance fee, no real need to refund a few millions FFA entrance fee, don't you agree?
Or how about other FFA special events? For example Mech producing empires could ask for FFA special events where only the Mech they just researched, and or its now no longer available variants, spawn, et voilą: (WOB-)Hornet night, Urban Mech revival night, Javelin night, Whitworth night, etc. ...
Or how about different maps for the FFA? For ease of use and or implementation one could start with only two different FFA maps and change / switch the map every week, or every two weeks, or every month, or ...
Rather small and limited - to the FFA, no empire assets endangered - code changes like these should be managable, even for a less experienced admin / coder. Don't you agree?

the Rhino / Nemi event was set up by Wayward_Son, for a New Years Eve event if i recall correctly
As for future FFA special events, that item is already on the list of future promotions
The discontinued variants is a new theme...that is now on the list of future options
As for the changing of maps...looking at ways to handle that as well. Considering ideas like weekly change the map, even if simply to a new random generation...would change things up some. Not sure if we can create specific maps for the FFA and have it rotate them into the mix randomly, or for special events

Honestly I don't think Nev could have a worse admin. I could hire a 6 year old kid straight out of grade 1 and he would have more of a clue.
