Overview:
The Photon was an early attempt by the SLDF to create an all-energy mech
solution and keep it independent of supply lines.


Capabilities:
The Photon mounted an unprecedented amount of firepower on its massive chassis.
Intended to be fully independent of supply lines, the Photon's low speed and
lack of long range weapons made it vulnerable to faster mechs armed with LRM's
or PPC's. The common tactic was to draw them on a goose chase, isolate it and
then attack it with superior numbers.

The SLDF quickly identified the flaw and reassigned the Photon to operate
alongside other mechs, providing energy weapon support.

As one of the older mechs in the SLDF it was eclipsed by other designs and
production ceased in 2580 after nearly 450 units were produced. Unfortunately
the design used its own proprietory systems which made field refits nearly
impossible, even ER Large Lasers could not be fitted without massive
reconstruction work and only a handful were converted, often by the most
stubborn of Techs looking for a challenge. By 2600, the Photon was phased into
the reserve or sold on the surplus market where it served as a "poor man's
Awesome" during the earlier Succession Wars. A handful survived until the 31st
century, usually in sleepy backwater garrisons that didn't wish to deal with
ammo supply problems.

Slow, but well-armoured the Photon was considered as one of the most powerful
mechs in SLDF when first launched, the multiple laser armament was quite
powerful, but 28 heat sinks were not enough to keep the mech from overheating.


Battle History:
The Photon performed adequately in its early days. Often used to lead assaults
and breakthrough operations, it performed quite well at the first task, but
rather poorly at the second where its slow speed and lack of range was a
serious disadvantage.

During the Battle For Terra, the Photon was reduced to guarding landing zones
and mop up operations.


Deployment:
About 1/3rd of Photons were assigned to SLDF reserves. Comstar inherited the
survivors of Kerensky's campaign against Amaris, most of which were taken over
by Blakist forces and used up in the defence of Terra against Devlin Stone.

Another 1/3rd were scrapped for parts, while the remaining were sold as surplus
to Inner Sphere forces in the late 2600's.


Variants:
The design was phased out of the SLDF before new technology could solve some if
its design weaknesses, attempts to modify the Photon were often thwarted by the
incompatibility with other weapon systems and components, making upgrades
nearly impossible.
