==Overview:==
With new and emerging technologies came new advances in warfare, such as the
Arrow IV artillery system. The Federated Suns sent out a request for a
dedicated unit capable of mounting the new system and bolster its armed forces
. Numerous military contractors responded with different designs, and all were
rejected by the AFFS due to not meeting the strict imposed by the contract.
That is, until the Alkett company, a local New Avalon based civilian vehicle
manufacturer, submited their design, the Nashorn, German for "rhinoceros",
from an extinct mammal which one flourished on Terra.

The Nashorns meet all the requirements with high remarks, most notably low
cost, and ease of maintenace. Originally, the Nashorn prototype had a slower
ground speed, but Alkett asured the AFFS the reason for the slow speed was due
to the lack of the ability to procure a higher rated fusion engine in time and
that production models wuold be much faster.

==Capabilities:==
The Nashorn was designed and engineered specifically for the sole task of
providing artillary support from behind the battlefront. As such, it utilizes
only endosteel in its construction, which brings down costs substationally
when compared to other newer mech designs. Standard heatsinks are installed,
rather then the newer, double-strength varienty further emphasing its role as
a support unit. 9 tons of Zimmerit Titanium-Diamond Fiber Alloy standard armor
provide adequate protection against enemy fire.

Powered by a Maybach HL 180 fusion engine; the Nashorn is capable of a crusing
speed of 43 km/h and a flank speed of 64km/h, enough to keep up with the pace
of battle. Finally, four Sachs La 120 HDA jumpjets give the mech a mobility
for difficult terrain not originally required in the design specifications.

The Nashorn recieves its namesake from the 88mm Pak 43/1 (L/71) Arrow IV
system, located in the right torso. When viewed from the left side, the
barrel of the weapon is angle in such a way that a long horn is projecting
from the forehead. 10 rounds of ammunition are provide in the left torso,
protected by CASE, allowing the unit a total firing time of just over one and
a half minutes. Two Mauser Model M Medium laser, mounted in each arm giving
its fists a rather large, gauntlet appearance, allows it to defend itself.

==Deployment==
The Nashorn is deployed in batteries of four units, often alongside other
artillary vehicles. Occasionally when deployed in company size, the volley of
12 Nashorns emptying their magazines in 90 seconds is described as a stampeed
as the consecutive rounds approach closer and closer to enemy units durring
the barrage.

Following complaints from units fielding the Nashorn, the Alkett company began
manufacturing the Nashorn II to overcome problems found in the original Nashorn.

==Capabilities:==
Two of the loudest complaints of the original Nashorn was its battle endurance
and heat dissipation. Often Nashorns would simply run out of ammo or
shutdown from the massive heat generated when firing its monstrous gun during
a running battle. To remedy these faults, the Nashorn is a full 5 tons heavier
to incorporate an additional heatsink and two full tons of ammunition.
Additional armor is mounted on the arms and side torso to protect the large
gun from hits that may disable it.

==Deployment==
The Nashorn II is fielded in lances of four, replacing the now dubbed Nashorn
I. Nashorn Is are utilized as artillery training units or temporarily
replacing Nashorn II's undergoing repair. If an engagement requires specialty
ammunition rounds, that job is often given to the Nashorn I so that its
heavier brother can carry a full compliment of standard ammo.
