------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The CPLT-C1 Catapult was produced by Hollis Incorporated in a limited production run between 2561 and 2563 under a special military contract with the Star League. It was officially classified as a close-support vehicle, designed as a second-line defense with strong offensive capabilities.
Early models of the Catapult were equipped with no close support weapons, but the most current versions carry four medium lasers for close support.
The Catapult, which is used mainly in the Capellan Confederation, does exist in other Successor State militaries in small numbers. It is unlikely that non-Liao Catapults will be earmarked to receive new technology, but the Capellans are planning a major field refit that will mandate new tactics on the part of Capellan commanders. Recovered technology allows Capellan Techs to improve further on the Catapult's excellent capabilities as a long-range support 'Mech.
==Capabilities:== The original Catapult was equipped with the reliable Holly missile systems, mounting two racks of 15 LRMs each. This gave the Catapult a range of nearly 630 meters, capable of destroying an enemy from a long distance without risking opposing fire. The Capellan military greatly increased this range with the Luxor Mobile Battery 1 Arrow IV Missile System, but it was crippled from the long range roll after firing its meager single ton of ammo. The Draconis Combine, having the second largest concentration of the Catapults during the Succession wars improved upon the initial conception started by House Liao.
Yori Mech Works, on Al'Nair, imported the design specs system from the Capellans and locally manufactured the Luxor Mobile Battery for their Catapults in place of original Holly LRM-15. But unlike the Capellans, Yori Mech works went further and removed five additional heat sinks, replacing the ten remaining with doubles. Three additional tons of ammo was added in two large ammo bays on both sides of the torso for a total of twenty shots, protected by CASE in the event of internal ammo explosion. This change required the reworking of the engine and gyro as well as the reallocation of the center torso medium lasers to the armsto allow the passage of a 200 kilogram missile.
The finishing touch was the replacement of the armor with ProTec 12 Ferro-Fibrous purchased from the Scarorough Manufactures plant (located on Al'Nair with Yori Mech Works) and the CASE system, freeing up enough weight to add include the oddly placed Apple Churchill 442x TAG from Ceres Metals in the left arm (a condition for the specs of the Luxor Arrow IV, as it helped to stimulate the Capellan economy). The TAG was added as an after thought, should it be paired with another Catapult and one member of the duo needing to scout for the other.
On those occasions when the 'Mech is engaged at close range, it is more than able to defend itself with its four Martell medium lasers. The 'Mech does lack an effective anti-infantry defense system, however, because it was designed as a second-line fire-support system. Also, its lack of manipulative hands is a drawback in close combat situations.
The Anderson Propulsion 21 jump jets have been a problem for the Catapult ever since their installation. If used extensively, the system tends to break its conductive housing. This in turn vents some of the jet exhaust directly into the 'Mechs interior, leading to overheating. In 2566, the Star League Quartermaster Corps ordered a recall, but many units never came in to receive the replacement systems. Some models are therefore equipped with an Anderson Propulsion 25, which does not share the same design difficulties.
The 'Mech's emergency pilot escape system is a side-firing escape hatch instead of the very common roof hatch system. This can cause some damage to the MechWarrior, but is generally considered safer overall in an emergency situation.

Wow, seen a lot of terribad designs from the 3050 TRO (like it took a total of six hours at the office to output that thing). Never noticed them when I was younger, but now...wow, yeah there was a lot of room for improvement. And most of the fluff spec is from the origional TRO write ups, so it may seem kind of out of whack. Like to work with the original text.

I honestly think you could achieve almost the same performance just removing 2 or 3 standard heat sinks and sticking with the ferro-fiberous armor. You would be hard pressed to over heat it without firing everything and jumping, just shoot the Arrow IV or lasers. I don't bother with tag on artillery units (even in your dual Catapult pairing example) because if my old-fading memory is correct, units spotting with TAG can not make any other type of attack during that turn (I'd dig up my rule book to verify, but it's buried in a box). I'd just assign the two Catapults with a guard unit fielding TAG.
