Overview: Aimed at the more well-to-do militias and mercenaries, the Gavial is a light tracked tank designed with speed and mobility, though with enough fighting capablity to be a threat to heavier units.
Capabilities: The Gavial comes in at 35 tons and is an exercise in balanced speed, firepower and protection.
With a top speed of over 80kph the Gavial is fast for a tracked vehicle not intended for cavalry or recce work. Although not designed for hit and run, it is mobile enough to make itself a hard target and the favourable speed rating allows it to keep pace with most tracked forces. Though the tank uses a fusion engine, most of its components are readily available, making maintenance relatively easy.
The armament is simple and rugged, a PPC and machine-gun are mounted in the turret complemented by a fixed, front firing SRM2.
The PPC is tied directly into the fusion engine's heat sinks and is the tank's main weapon, capable of delivering a painful blow to most light and medium opponents, while the MG and SRM allow the Gavial to engage enemy infantry and powered armour that attempts to get close.
The armour is designed to survive two gauss rifle impacts in the frontal area and at least an AC/20 on the sides and rear. The highly sloped, low profile design makes the Gavial an ideal ambush tank/Mech destroyer, deployed in lances with overlapping fields of fire.
Despite its low profile, the Gavial is surprisingly roomy and comfortable, allowing the crew to remain in the tank for extended periods.
Battle History: Gavials were first deployed during the Fed-Com civil war. Assigned to armoured regiments they were used as tank destroyers or heavy recce. They were found to be well-suited to combined operations with mechs.
When used in protracted engagements, the Gavial tended to under-perform, lacking the punch of heavier vehicles, often resulting in heavy losses. As a result many Gavials were removed from front-line units and assigned to second-line elements or used for garrison duty.
Gavials fought hard in several Jihad battles, cementing its reputation as a solid and reliable design. Demand after the Jihad remained high, with most nations buying the Gavial or licensing it for domestic use.
Variants: The Liao variant drops the PPC in favour of a Large Pulse laser, the SRM is replaced by a streak version.
The Republic version also replaces the PPC with a pair of Light PPC's and adds half a ton of extra armour and CASE to protect the crew.

A good solid design. Not exactly to my taste but none the less a good solid design. Mech jocks take your tank lightly at their paral.
One suggestion drop half a ton of MG ammo for a CASE. I doubt that the tank will use up 100 rounds of MG ammo before it can be resupplied or it is destroyed.
Why argue if the glass is half full or half empty, when you know someone is going to knock it over and spill it anyways.
I was a Major *pain* before
But I got a promotion.
