Overview: As Wolf's Dragoons first entered the Inner Sphere they brought with them mechs and technology which hadn't been seen in centuries. Among them was the prototype of a new Marauder variant. The technology was archaic by Clan standards, but it still towered above the jury-rigged tech levels of the Inner Sphere. The prototype had to be downscaled in the production models to match Inner Sphere tech levels and avoid drawing any further attention.
Capabilities: The Marauder II prototypes mounted a much heavier armament than the Blackwell production models. Combining a pair of PPC's and medium lasers with a large laser and autocannon 10, the Marauder II carried a solid punch. Fifteen double strength heat sinks allowed the mech to keep a high rate of fire. 17 tons of Ferro Fibrous armour give the mech near maximum protection for its chassis size.
Unlike the later versions the medium lasers were mounted in the torso and the large laser in a chin mount.
As a newer 5A version was developed after the discovery of the Helm Memory Core, the use of the high heat ER PPC's required the removal of the large laser.
Battle History: All existing 4X prototypes were assigned to Zeta Battalion which had the benefit of being much less in the spotlight than the line regiments. They fought successfully in most Dragoon campaigns including the harrowing battles on Misery. The surviving models remained in service with the militia on Outreach. It is believed they were destroyed during the orbital bombardment by the World of Blake in the opening moves of the Jihad.
Deployment: The 4X were never made available outside of the Dragoons, serving with Zeta Battalion and the Home Guard on Outreach.
Variants: An upgrade package for 4A models was made available by Blackwell during the Fed Com Civil War to upgrade models produced before the Clan Invasion, but was poorly received because it relied on older weapon technology.
