Overview:
The Aldebaran was designed by Comstar as a training tool for the ComGuards,
allowing key personnel to gain combat experience to train the rest of Comstars
army.

Capabilities:
The Aldebaran was partially based on Star League research for a 55-ton fire
support mech. Comstar engineers redesigned it as a heavy mech.

The main armament is a pair of Armstrong autocannon/5 backed up by an LRM10 and
an SRM4. For close defence the Aldebaran mounts a pair of medium lasers.

The diverse armament allows the Aldebaran to engage enemy mechs at longer
ranges with little risk of overheating with eleven heat sinks. This makes the
mech a useful design, capable of fire-support both in attack and defense.

11 tons of plate give the Aldebaran adequate protection for all but the most
protracted engagements.

Overall the rusticity and rugged design makes the Aldebaran a popular Mech,
though it lacks the punch of more advanced designs, it can hold its own in
combat and is easy to maintain and repair.

Though outdated by the time of the Clan Invasion, it served with mercernaries
and Periphery states. Small numbers were upgraded with double strength heat
sinks, ferro fibrous armour and swapped weapons for more advanced versions. No
official Comstar upgrade was ever produced.

Battle History:
Comstar planted several caches of Mechs on some remote Inner Sphere and
Periphery planets, leaving subtle clues about their locations to various Inner
Sphere treasure hunters. Falsified Technical Readouts were published
mentioning the Aldebaran as a stopgap design intended for SLDF militia ending
up in front-line service. As the design could be independently linked to
earlier Star League research, the operation went unnoticed.

This allowed SLDF troops to operate covertly as mercenaries and gain the
required battlefield experience to build a cadre of trained officers for the
Comguards. Even when footage of Comguards training with Aldebarans was leaked,
Comstar was able to claim that one of its resarch team had come across a cache
and the mechs were being used by mercenaries to guard Comstar installations.

The Aldebaran was considered to be a transitional design, lacking the advanced
technology of their SLDF vintage mechs, it was used to fill the gaps in the
early years of their military deployment, but was soon phased out and became a
training mech. After the Clan Invasion and Tukayyid, the Aldebaran was offered
on the open market Ironically many were snapped up by the Word of Blake who
used it to build up their numbers and then offering some to various factions in
the Chaos March.

Deployment:
Though designed for service with Comstar the Aldebaran is in suprisingly
widespread use across the Inner Sphere. Still in use with Comguard training
cadres in small numbers, the Aldebaran has found a new lease of life with those
requiring a rugged, polvalent design.

Several batches of Aldebarans were handed over to the Kungsarmee to help
rebuild their forces.

The last batch of 40 units was produced in 3069 from existing stocks of spare
parts as the need for new mechs became pressing.

Variants:
Comstar never bothered to upgrade the Aldebaran. Most have been upgraded in
the field. As a result there are few identical Aldebarans in the field today.
