Overview:
Always an interesting source of design inspiration is the Johnson
'Mechworks Inc. archives. Although the notorious firm originally
folded without selling single design, the design team during the
original incarnation was extremely prolific, leaving dozens of
intriguing blueprints locked away in their databanks, untouched until
the company reformed shortly after the Clan invasion. While the new
JMInc. designs make extensive use of new and recovered technology,
older low-tech schematics are gradually surfacing, raising eyebrows
all over the Inner Sphere and beyond.

One of the most remarkable designs to emerge so far is the KNS-3T
Kensington, a startling entry in the rare 95-ton bracket. With an
incredibly versatile long-range complement, unrivalled staying power,
and a powerful close-range punch, the Kensington would have dominated
most battlefields of its time, and would still be a significant
presence if produced today. Critics and analysts are waiting
anxiously to see if the current design team produces a refit.

Capabilities:
Like nearly all useful 'Mechs of its size, the KNS-3T Kensington
is slow, capable of a top speed just shy of 54 km/h. However, its
abundance of long-range firepower means it won't need to move much to
influence the battle. A Fusigon PPC held in the right hand in the
forms the heart of the long-range punch, backed up by a mis-matched
pair of light Imperator Autocannon for sustained extreme-range work
and the always-impressive Shigunga 15-rack LRM system for
heavy-hitting when needed. In close, the Kensington swaps out for a
Totschlagen Short-Range 4-pack and a mass of Randall Hellbitch Medium
Lasers, backed up by a Dodd Light Laser and a pair of Sperry-Browning
mini-guns for anti-infantry work.

Visually, the original design concept is imposing. The Left Arm
is almost entirely dominated by the LRM rack, Catapult style, with an
underslung laser almost hidden by the missile tubes, the ball-hinged
shoulder providing a wide firing arc for both weapons. A
Marauder-ish over-the-shoulder mount gives the heavier of the
Kensington's two Autocannon nearly as wide an arc as the arm weapons,
while the solid-mount high on the other side provides excellent
stability for sniper shots with the lighter cannon on the right side.
Oddly, at least for larger JMInc. designs, none of the lasers point
backwards, so Kensington pilots would be well-advised to stick with
their lancemates, but the bristling mass of weapons on the front of
the 'Mech should encourage would-be backstabbers to step *very*
carefully.

The Kensington's main drawback is its incredibly delicate heat
balance, although the varied weaponry allows the flexibility required
to maintain that balance while still fielding significany firepower.
While sustained use of the LRM can cause fairly rapid overheating
while mobile, a pair of heat sinks in the legs allow the Kensington
to fire all its long-range weapons if it stands in shallow water, and
close range firepower should disable or chase off most enemies before
heat buildup gets too critical.

Known Variants:
The only proposed variant on the KNS-3T is to ditch the "extra"
AC/5 ammo in favour of a 16th Heat Sink, or to "balance out" the AC
and LRM ammo stocks. It was suggested that the AC/2 could be removed
entirely in favour of a Large Laser and additional Heat Sinks, but
according to the old records, the prototype's cooling system was
unable to accommodate the layout effectively, so the refit attempt
was abandoned.

My Blurb:
I haven't really gone "old school" JMInc. in a while, so here ya go, for old times' sake. A little off-the-wall, but still pretty effective, I think.

I don't know if I'd say it's off-the-wall, simply that JMI design standards tend to require weapons variety.

I would definately give this one a try, the LRM15 keeps it competative (in my mind, because it keeps the damage potental up).

The fluff about removing the AC2 made me try, even though I know it kills the character of a JMInc Original. I dropped the AC and bumped the LRM and SRM up to 20(2tons ammo) & 6 and added 2 HS

I figured any 'Mech with an AC/2 should include a variant that gets rid of it, since most people consider them completely useless. The LL was the natural choice weight-wise, but the resulting overheat means the Laser and the LRM can't really be fired in the same turn, and you can't do much with it at close range either . Adds a bit more variety to the weapon mix, but not much overall effectiveness, which is why I nixed it as a true variant.

And since when is the AC/5-AC/2 combo not off-the-wall? And where's the "WTF ammo balance?"

Here's my "quickie" level 2 refit...11 DHS instead of 15 singles, ERPPC, Artemis on the LRM, Streak the SRM, CASE both side torsos, upgrade the ACs to an Ultra 2 and a LB-5. pulse the Small and 2 of the Med Lasers, add 2 rear-mount lasers, and voila! Anyone else wanna give it a shot? I'm sure there's a way to fit a Gauss Rifle on there somewhere...

Oooh, a cool Level 2 refit!

That's the problem these days, there's no awesome level 2 refits anymore, anything and everything has been done.

Yeah, especially Assault 'Mechs...pile on all the heaviest weapons and call it a 'Mech.

That's one of the reasons I rarely touch ClanTech...by the time I'm done I've piled on so much crap just to use up tonnage that it ends up looking like every other Clan 'Mech in existence. IS level 2 is restrictive enough that it usually takes enough creativity to make it work that you end up with something with at least a hint of originality, but even so I often scrap a promising new design because I suddenly realize I've seen it before.

Just a quick poll here...any odds on this thing vs a Level 1 Atlas?

I'm going to vote in the Kensington's favor. More over-all long range firepower. I can see it now...

Round 1:

Kensignton fires AC/2 at Atlas Needing 12...Rolls 12!
Hits cockpit. Pilot Blacks out. Atlas falls, lands on head, kills pilot.

Ahh, beauty of it!

Been there, done that...took out an Atlas first round with an Urbie Think I only needed 10 to hit tho...

Not feeling very inspired lately for drawing or fluffing a JMInc-worthy design, so I thought I'd just necro an old one :-)

Any fresh opinions?
