These are the MBTs of the alternate history faction "Crossroads" which is related to the Clans in origin(branched off of Kerensky's exodus fleet).

The Charger MBTs themselves are quite small and albeit lacking in speed for their sizes. At 55 tons their engines barely propel them to 60km/h The 220 rated engine used in most of the MBTs is quite easy to produce and a lot of the MBTs can be made at one time. On top of that the later MBTs ironed out the designed flaws, making them reliable, easier to pilot, and easier to produce.

Costs are calculated as if none of the optional design quirks are used.
Optional design quirks for most or all Chargers:
Narrow/low profile(All)
Easy to Pilot(Exceptions:Mk.I, Mk.IV)
Easy to Maintain(Exceptions:Mk.I, Mk.IV)

The first Charger, the Mk.I, was obsolete before it made it off the... "assembly line". These tanks exists simply because SOMETHING was needed to fend off the nearby hostile periphery nation XXXXX. There wasn't even enough time to build autocannons. The result of desperation was this "tank", which looked literally like a gun mounted to a box. Rifled barrel WWII style cannons were easy enough to build and quick enough to build by the technologies they had operating at the moment, so a Heavy Rifle makes up this vehicle's main armament. Though it was inferior even by periphery standards, a special AT munition type that allows the shell to deal it's full damage to vehicles at a cost to accuracy(-1) was developed which evened the odds against the AC/10 equipped periphery power. XXXXX would continue to hold the technology advantage until Crossroad's scientists and engineers, who had the brains but not the materials, could even the odds with the Mk.II and finally surpass XXXXX with the Mk.III

The periphery nation XXXXX lost it's major technological advantage when they failed to destroy enough of the increasingly advanced factories, which began to churn out the Mk.II MBT. The weapon of choice was a RAC/2, one of the first of it's kind. For the most part it retained the range of the AC/2 while increasing it's rate of fire up to sixfold. Though it could jam, it could be cleared with relative ease. Aesthetically it looked like the Mk.I on purpose, suprising the foes with a weapon that could deal about as much damage as an AC/10, yet fire farther. The MGs were lost as the RAC/2 could work the anti-infantry and AA roles. Nowadays this is still produced for the purpose of selling to periphery nations as a cheap AA vehicle for modest profits.

By the time the Mk.III was ready for production XXXXX was losing many of it's advantages, including industrial capacities, tactically, and technologically. The Mk.III represented the technological advantage of Crossroads, who in time were able to build and make use of the advanced technologies they knew how to work. Upgrades from the Mk.II included a main weapon replacement, the addition of a fuel cell engine, an upgrade to HFF(Crossroads calls this "Vehicle Ferro-Fibrous"), and increased durability to the chassis itself. A coaxial ER Small laser also supplemented the gauss rifle in the turret. XXXXX by now realized their mistake in attacking the settlements but by now it was too late.

Aesthetically, the Mk.III and above looked closer to a WWII era Pershing than the Mk.I's boxy, primitive, sloppily put together formed.

The Mk.III is still not obsolete despite roughly 300 years of service. It sells quite well, especially to isolated periphery nations that want a taste of advanced technologies.

XXXXX pulling out was not enough for Crossroads. They wanted revenge. But they would have to wait... Though He3 deposits were discovered and promptly were mined it would be a while before Crossroads could afford to rebuild, let alone mount a counterattack. In the meantime, manufacturers at Crossroads had some time to experiment with concepts for their next-generation vehicle.

Both on paper and in practice, the Mk.IV was a huge mistake.

The HVAC/10 didn't have the range or the firepower of the Mk.III's gauss rifle. The LAC/2, though it could use some advanced munitions, was extremely lacking in brute force. It made a sub-par and weighty secondary weapon. It's only fallback weapon after those were empty, if it survived for that long, was an insignificant micro pulse laser.

Even when you don't consider the firepower of the tank, the LAC/2 mounted in a pivot turret in front of the vehicle complicated repairs and made the vehicle awkward to pilot.

The year of retalliation was nearing. Crossroads decided to make a modification to the Mk.III instead of using the Mk.IV to fulfill it's needs. Both Mk.V MBT variants sport a large energy weapon as their main weapons to untie them from logistical needs. These are also the first chargers to make use of a fusion engine. As of the year 3075 the Mk.V is the most common and recognized charger MBT in existance.

The Mk.Va focuses on it's primary weapon having sheer firepower. An ER PPC(with the quality of clan tech weapons) is accurate at impressive ranges.

The Mk.Vb downsizes the main weapon to an ER Large Laser, which had less weight and heat sink requirements than the ER PPC. The trade allowed an extra SRM6 to be mounted on front with 2 tons of ammunition. It's ammunition can be configured for a wide variety of uses.
In addition the Crossroadian equivalent of a Watchdog CEWs is included to the Mk.Vb, explaining the moderate spike in cost from the Va.

The counterstrike against XXXXX, after 50 long years, finally began. Both sides prepared for the conflict long before then. XXXXX technology access improved slightly(Examples:UACs and LBXs and Enhanced LRMs) but not by much, not enough. There was one quickly apparent advantage they had, though. Air superiority in the form of VTOLs and Conventional Fighters. Two solutions were proposed, and both made it to the front lines. The first was to develop and include their own VTOLs in the next dropship wave which could GA survivably and hunt other VTOLs, which resulted in the development of the Mirage Multipurpose Chopper. The second proposition was to redesign the aged relic Mk.II MBT with modern technology, purpose built for AAA. Upgrades such as HFF and an engine replacement allowed for an upgrade to a RAC/5 autocannon with many tons of ammo for AA duty. It's not shabby at fighting mechs and vehicles either. Regardless, both the Mk.VI and the Mirages were successful at decreasing XXXXX's air superiority factor long enough for the arrival of Crossroads built aerospace fighters finally completely turned the tables completely in the air.

XXXXX enlisted some support from a few mercenary groups to help defend their territory when they realized they were losing the battle. They promised a hefty reward to the mercs. Most of the mercs that took the jobs ended up deceased. Some of the merc groups had advanced technologies such as mech grade XL engines and Plasma Cannons, some of which were salvageable. Inversely to what most would do, Crossroads salvaged the mechs and installed them to their vees! The Dragoon Field Mod is an example of what churned up. Though it is on paper extremely expensive for a 55 tonner, Crossroads never actually had to pay for most of the salvaged equipment. After the war many of these refits were sold for inflated prices, resulting in some of the tanks earning more than what was paid for when they rolled off the assembly lines!

One commonly used charger variant is the UrbanCharger. XXXXX evacuated entire cities just so they could house their Sniper Field Guns to hammer a nearby battlefield. In such a situation UrbanChargers were sent in to clear the area. Reliability of the Chargers was increased with an Armored Motive System, though one could remove it to exchange the Plasma Cannon for a Plasma Rifle as a variant.
Strangely, despite the prevalence of the UrbanCharger on Crossroad's side, XXXXX's uses of the Urbanmech, and the frequency of urban warfare during the course of the war, the Urbancharger and the Urbanmech met only once during the bloody war. The result was a draw.

The versatile Charger Chassis has been used for many things. The SPG modification was a variant rarely utilized. By increasing the weight of the Charger MBT by 5 tons and upsizing the engine slightly, a Long Tom Artillery Cannon could be installed on the main turret. The extremely heavy weapon is effective at providing short range local artillery support to it's company at the sacrifice of secondary armament.

The war took a lot longer than first expected because XXXXX brung in some of it's allies. In the course of battles it was clear that dedicated special operations forces needed to be present at least to engage targets of opportunity via combat drop. The experimental Turbocharger MBT, along with the Mirage VTOLs and Special Operations Mechs, consists of these spec. ops forces. It hasn't seen much service, though, as the war ended pretty quickly after the Turbo Charger was deployed.

The Mk.VII has been the most recently developed MBT of Crossroad's in production since 3105. Since roughly 3095 it's presence has been known to the Inner Sphere and the Clans, and the It's chassis is based on the Charger Mk.Vb, with it's engine replaced by an XL and it's weapon upgraded to a shorter ranged but effective Plasma Rifle. It's armor is upgraded to Reactive to protect itself from artillery and missile fire. To make up the range loss of the plasma rifle, an Artemis V equipped LRM20 provides adequate ranged firepower. Other than that the classic Big Gun + Streak SRM loadout remains.
