Lieutenant Ethan Krauss
The Amaris military had the dubious reputation of favoring its wealthiest patrons when offering commissions. The officer corps became a mixed-bag of incompetents and tactical geniuses as a result, often hindering campaigns with a heavy load of political maneuvering and croneyism. Only those who learned to be cunning in the board room as well as on the battlefield achieved any measure of success in the Rim Worlds Army.

Although Ethan Krauss achieved his early success on the shoulders of his father, his triumphs on the battlefield were earned through grit and determination. Never one to enjoy the trappings of high society, Ethan favored the cockpit of a BattleMech over the armchair of a board room. His uncanny ability to size up his opponents and predict their troop movements quickly caught the attention of the general staff after several successful raids into Commonwealth territory. His talents were quickly transferred to the vaunted 99th Amaris Dragoons in preparation for the infamy of 2765.

During the war, Ethan commanded several scout formations, acting as an elite commando deep behind enemy lines. Preferring agile 'Mechs to the slow, heavy formations of the Dragoons, the scouts were a constant nuisance to SLDF commanders. During the battle for Mars, the 99th's Charlie Company, comprised mainly of Phoenix BattleMechs and a compliment of Zephyr Hovertanks, executed a rear guard action as the remainder of the division fled the SLDF onslaught.

As the 141st Striker Regiment surged forward, Ethan ordered the several of his units to set detonation charges to the exterior hulls of the hover tanks. The remaining Phoenixes slowed the advance with a barrage of sniper fire as the Zephyrs executed a charge into the legs of the heaviest 'Mechs. The crippled units created a barricade which funneled the advance through a tight corridor. Vehicle-towed field gunners cut down the advancing Mongoose and Hussars with a thunderous rain of gauss and auto cannon fire, checking the SLDF advance while the 99th's personnel loaded onto the Confederate-class Dropship for withdrawal.

Being the son of an industrialist mogul has its advantages. Although Helmut Krauss loathed his son's decision to join the military, he enjoyed the lucrative contracts Amaris gifted to his manufacturing division at Krauss-Liemann, Inc. One of the first companies to receive captured Hegemony technology after 2755, technicians were quick to put these wonder weapons to use on their existing products.

As a parting gift to his son, Helmut ordered his design team to enhance their Phoenix chassis with the most up-to-date weaponry possible. This included a hand-built light polarization shield: One of the many projects Krauss-Liemann, Inc. earned the exclusive rights to develop. Though the cost was more than triple the projected budget, several of these prototypes were built for the Rim Worlds' most affluent military leaders, being assigned to the elite pilots of the Republican Guard and Amaris Dragoons.

The original prototype given to Ethan survived much of the war until it was destroyed in the battle for Geneva in 2778.
